Common Sense on the Texas Border

Dear Mexico: Your children are not our problem

Dear Mexico: Your children are not our problem

Finally, some good news on the illegal immigration front — of course coming from a common-sense Texan:

DEL RIO — Mexican children have crossed the border for years to attend public school in Texas, using U.S. addresses to enroll illegally — but this year, school officials in Del Rio plan to kick them out.

Officials from the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District stood at the border port that separates Del Rio from Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, and watched for school children entering the U.S. on Wednesday. Parents were handed a letter warning that their children will be expelled from school unless they immediately provide proof that they live in the United States.

For years, the enrollment of Mexican students had been an open secret, but Superintendent Kelt Cooper said that after the district received a report that more than 540 school-age children were recorded crossing from the Mexican state of Coahuila into the United States, he had to take action.

“When we have vans with Coahuila license plates dropping kids off at elementary schools and a report that says hundreds of kids are coming across … we have a problem,” Cooper told the Del Rio News Herald. “With these kinds of numbers, it was out of control.”

Now all we need is for more schools in Texas and other border states to start doing this and whatever else it takes to quit blowing tax payer dollars on illegal immigrant benefits.

The best quote from the whole article:

A drop in attendance will likely hurt the school district’s budget, however, because schools get state funding based on enrollment and attendance. Cooper estimated the district could lose $2.7 million in state funding.

“But the fact is, that wasn’t our money to begin with,” he said.

Damn straight.

  1. THANK YOU Superintendent Kelt Cooper!! I live in a state where the illegal alien issue was out of control when my kids were in school. They are grown now and the illegal alien problem has grown ever worse. So I am thrilled that SOMEONE is FINALLY doing something about it. I just hope more Superintendents follow suit. Thank You, Thank You!!!!!

  2. Outstanding!
Though I suspect that Superintendent Cooper’s job may be in jeopardy, now, from the open border Soros crowd.

  3. About time someone came to their senses. Why should American taxpayers foot the bill to education Mexican children? Let the Mexican government get their collective act together and do that. They’ve gotten enough jobs from America thanks to NAFTA, they should have the funds to start propping up their school system.

    • I assume the argument is going to be that the kids are American citizens. However, it is the local districts within a state that pay for the school. If they don’t live in the district, they do not receive the benefit of attending that school.

Leftards like to argue that it penalizes poor people, i.e., they don’t have the benefit of attending rich schools. But as studies and common sense tells us, pouring money into a school district has little effect.

I always cringe when I hear about computers in schools. All it means is that there are going to be a bunch of kids goofing off instead of learning.

      Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2009, 6:42 am
      • First having a computer it is a neccesity because if one is not trained to work with one, hardly a job can be found.
In PA. children that attended public school had to prove that parents lived with them. Mine went to Prep, Catholic Schools and even that we pay tuition we had to show proof.
Many people specially Koreans, Chinese plus Mexicans send their kids to the US to get free schooling with our tax dollars.

        • Yes, one must be computer literate in this day and age. However, it is still a complete waste of time.

    • Well said. Too often i hear of illegal this, illegal that, and see how often it goes on. To me they should just stop those kids coming across the border…

  4. I can’t believe what a bunch of racists you guys are! Don’t you see that America is evil, and one way that we can make it up to the rest of the world is by allowing unrestricted access over our borders by anyone who wants to come here? Bigots!

    Posted by Colin | September 11, 2009, 6:53 am
    • You obviously don’t have a job or pay taxes.

Racist, HELL YES I AM RACIST AGAINST FREE LOADERS!

They can take the 20 Billion dollars they made off of DRUGS last year to teach their kids something, Grams and Kilos seem to be a popular subject!

      • You are another one who needs to read before you post.

Most of us are familiar with Colin and even if we weren’t, we are familiar with this style of satire.

But, for those of you who are clearly not, Colin immediately followed his first post with:

That was sarcasm, by the way.

    • In Tx women cross to have babies that are US citizens[the only country that grants one with alien parents]they konw exactly all the free services they get medical, medicines, food, etc.
The schools spend more money on Bilingual education than on gifted programs, CALL YOUR SENATOR TO GRANT US CITIZENCHIP ONLY TO CHILDREN OF US OR LEGAL RESIDENT PARENTS. They do not get nothing FREE.

      • It’s in the US Constitution that if someone is born on US soil, they are a citizen. You would need a constitutional amendment to change it and that is not going to happen.

For the record, bilingual education does not help children. All it does is create second class citizens to fill low wage jobs. That way the donks can have a ready supply of gardeners, laborers, and nannies.

  6. Thank God SOMEONE is going to do something about these leeches. Send them back to where they came from and let their own country educate them.

    Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2009, 7:25 am
    • They are not leeches – they’re children. And as already mentioned, a number of them are probably US citizens, so this is their country. However, since they do not live in the district, they are not entitled to attend the schools – just like other children who do live in the US and are citizens.

  7. I have to say good job. I don’t live in a border state but I can imagine how chaotic that would be. I mean, that’s like my old high school, except with 500 more people *my old school WAS about 500 people* that would be crazy.

Though I would like to say to the person who talked about computers, uh, a lot of kids don’t actually do that, especially if they have assignments on the computers. And besides, it’s the student’s fault if they get bad grades then. I say let them do it if they want to, they can fail out of school for all I care.

    Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2009, 7:29 am
  8. Hey, Colin. Why don’t you go live in Mexico? Racists? No. I wouldn’t care if they were Canadians crossing the border, they shouldn’t be allowed to go to school here. Get a clue, we’re not doing so well, and we don’t need to pay for the world anymore. They owe us enough.

    Posted by Kim | September 11, 2009, 8:21 am
    • Kim: Why don’t you read all of Colin’s comments?

      Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2009, 8:48 am
      • Dear Anonymous: Pardon me if I’m not familiar with Colin’s sarcasm. That’s why you have to be careful of how you write things when you post or email. Robbie’s to my post was very informative unlike your accusatory tone, so you would do well to learn from him.

My apologies to Colin. I’m new to this board and wasn’t aware this was a running joke with him.

        Posted by Kim | September 11, 2009, 2:26 pm
        • Kim: You ignorant slut. Now, that’s accusatory.

However, suggesting that you read all of Colin’s comments, of which there were only two, is not accusatory. If you had before you opened your fat yap, you would have seen that he immediately posted that it was sarcasm. I guess to you pointing out the fucking obvious is mandatory.

    • Kim, I know Colin — a retired Navy veteran (which I try not to hold against him), and as staunchly Conservative as they come. He also enjoys a bit of sarcasm from time-to-time. This was one of those times.

  9. And now I read in Drudge this morning that Perry has sent Texas National Guard to the border because of the violence, etc. and the failure of the gov to do anything about it. Hutchinson is beside herself.

Whatever you guys do, keep Perry in his job !!!

Can they block them from the hospitals too?????

  12. The American People are only hurting themselves by not addressing this issue and bring up the “I pay taxes, and they don’t” card every time it comes up. These are US citizens and should have a right to an education. These are US citizens living in Mexico. The only thing we are helping create is uneducated citizens who later in life will exercise their right to live in the US. By then, they will have no education, a poor job, and finally pay fewer taxes themselves. This will only lead to these same individuals relying on government programs for money, which they will be very eligible to get since they are U.S. citizens. It’s quite simple actually: Education for these people will cause them to obtain higher wage paying jobs; higher income leads to higher income tax; ultimately leading to their own contribution to the system.

    Posted by Anonymous | September 11, 2009, 6:14 pm
    • If we allow out of district kids living in Mexico to attend any school on the north side of the border, we have to allow citizens to take their kids out of district to the best schools. The rules are there for a reason and apply to everyone. Why do Mexicans always think they do not have to follow the rules?
If you want your kids in that school, move to the district and pay school taxes. If you won’t or can’t, attend the schools where you live.

      Posted by Lynn | February 24, 2010, 12:33 pm
  13. That’s right. I do pay taxes and they don’t. And my taxes go to support my local schools and their don’t. And, they are not being treated any differently than US kids living in the US. How hard is that to understand?

I would love to send my kids to Beverly Hills High School. However, since I do not live in Beverly Hills and pay no taxes to support the schools in Beverly Hills, I am not entitled to send my kids there. It is illegal.

Believe it or not, they do have schools in Mexico and they are free. So enough with the knee jerk leftard reaction.

  14. Y como vas a llevar a los ninos a la escuela de Beverly Hills si vives aqui en Del Rio?

  15. Kids crossing the border with backpacks does not make them illegal. Living on the mexican border, you will have people that have family on both sides. People will travel to mexico for medical appointments(go obama)! The list can go on and on. I think people jumped to conclusions. Yes, some maybe illegal, but i believe many are here legally and just caught up in a publicity stunt. As a veteran of OIF/OEF i love my country, but there are times when i am a little disgusted by the people that make up this nation.

    Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2009, 11:21 am
    • who cares if your an oif/oef veteran? YOU made that choice. It doesn’t entitle you to anything special. And, yeah, me too. I’n on my 5th tour. Boo hoo.

  16. Holy Cow!

I started an argument on Friday and didn’t even know it until today.

Robbie, et al: thank you for coming to my defense.

John, Kim: Hi, pleased to meet you. Despite my tendency toward sarcasm, I’m actually a nice guy once you get to know me.

But that’s not what I came here to talk to you about.

    Anonymouse said:

That statement would be relevant if kids crossing the border with backpacks were being arrested and hauled off to jail. But that’s not happening. They’re being given a letter, asking for proof that they live in the school district.

When I enrolled my kids in school, I had to provide proof that we live in the school district. I do not know the exact extent of Del Rio ISD, but I’m thinking it probably doesn’t extend into Mexico.

    Posted by Colin | September 14, 2009, 11:42 am
    • Not arrested, but they are being singled out. Like i said before, not all are illegal. Do you think they stopped kids that did not look hispanic that were crossing the border(and in del rio, there are many)with a backpack? im sure they didnt. i think the situation was handled poorly. it could have been handled with tact.

      Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2009, 2:32 pm
      • Yes, I do think they gave every kid crossing the border who looked like a student the handout – whether hispanic for not.

Frankly, your argument that they are legal US citizens living in the US but just happened to be spending the night with relatives on the other side of the border is ridiculous.

        Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2009, 3:18 pm
  17. It is not ridiculous, it is a fact. I personally know families who travel back and forth legally, with their children legally enrolled in del rio schools. There are also private schools here, where you pay tuition, and do need to prove residency. Living in a border town, you are going to have an increased number of families that live on both sides of this nonexistent border. i agree with finding the kids that are here illegally and removing them them. i just think the way it was done was tasteless.

    Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2009, 4:09 pm
    • Sounds like the simple solution is to prove you live in this district. A few months of utility payments in your name. A signed lease agreement?
Property tax records? If you are not paying school taxes, you have no argument.
