One of my favorite local golf courses is Shadown Glen Golf Course out in Manor, TX.
From a review at Golf Texas:
Shadow Glen Golf Club is the newest championship design of renowned architects Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell of Bechtol-Russell Golf and embodies the qualities of the finest courses in the country while staying true to the Central Texas feel of hills, trees and wind-swept prairies.
And now I have a reason to play out there even more — from an email I just received from the course:
Celebrate Our Freedom
Shadow Glen wants to honor all who have served.
All military personnel and veterans are invited to participate in a
Four Person Scramble at 8AM, November 11th
Bring a foursome or sign up individually
You must be Military Personnel or a Veteran to Play.
Entry Fee is Complimentary. That’s right, Complimentary for Active Military Personnel or Retired Veterans.
ShadowGlen Golf Club truly appreciates the sacrifices that the Men and Women of our armed forces makes.
Field is limited to the first 120 players.
A free day of golf to area military personnel and Veterans? That’s a helluva gesture. And I’ll remember it the next time I’m making a tee time in the Austin area.
(NOTE: I won’t be playing, as I’m no longer active duty, nor am I retired. But I genuinly appreciate ShadowGlen’s gesture.)

The last time I played at ShadowGlen a good friend of mine and former co-worker, who also is a retired Air Force veteran, was working there as the starter. We shared an office for three years and played a lot of golf together.
I don’t know if he still works there, but kudos to ShadowGlen for honoring those that served our country with free golf.
