Because of brutal animals like Robert Lee Thompson, who is scheduled for execution on November 19 for his part in the December 5, 1996 murder of convenience store clerk Mansoor Rahim in Houston.
Thompson and his buddy Sammy Butler robbed the convenience store, and during the robbery, undisputed testimony shows that Thompson:
…shot store clerk Mubarakali Meredia four times but did not kill him. After the clerk opened the cash drawer, Thompson placed his pistol to Meredia’s neck and pulled the trigger a fifth time. The weapon was out of bullets. Thompson then clubbed Meredia with his pistol.
Thompson’s victim had the audacity to not die the way Thompson intended. What is obvious is that Thompson is an evil piece-of-shit who clearly intended to kill Meredia. If he had one more bullet in his gun, he would have.
Sammy Butler then shot and killed Mansoor Rahim as they fled the store.
Both men deserve to die for their roles in this crime. Both men are equally vile, dangerous, and guilty of the events that unfolded that fateful night.
The real tragedy to justice in this case is that, in a separate trial, Butler only got life in prison instead of the death penatly after prosecutors could not prove that Butler “intended” to kill Rahim (I think anytime you point a gun at another person and pull the trigger, it’s pretty clear that your intent is to kill…).
Thompson and Butler had robbed at least eight other convenience stores, with three of them involving the fatal shooting of the clerks.
Evidence at his trial showed Thompson, who is black, told detectives he went on a crime spree in November and December 1996 because God told him to “do something about Asian and Middle Eastern store clerks who discriminated against blacks.”
Prosecutors said Thompson acknowledged being the gunman in two other fatal robberies.
Which also makes this a racially motivated hate-crime.
Nice guy. No danger to society or others whatsoever…
Of course the Houston Chronicle writer, Allan Turner, has writen a piece that almost comes across as unbiased and nueteral…but their anti-DP stance is pretty clear, as it only paints one side of the story (Thompson’s). It would have been nice to balance out the piece with some quotes and information from the victim’s perspective…
