UPDATE (5:59 a.m., Nov 6) — I awoke this morning to learn that one of the wounded victims has died, leaving the current count at 13 murdered and 30 wounded.
UPDATE (8:21 p.m.): Lt. Gen. Robert Cone from Ft. Hood just announced that Maj. Hassan is NOT dead. He was wounded with multiple gun shot wounds, but is in stable condition.
He was shot first by a female civilian police officer, who was also reported to be dead. Thankfully, she is also alive and stable.
I’m actually thankful that Hassan is still alive. He is not a martyr. He will have to face his crimes. And we’ll have answers we might not have had otherwise.
UPDATE (5:35 p.m.): The two suspects arrested shortly after the shooting have been released, according to the office of U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, whose district includes Fort Hood.

There aren’t many details yet, but it’s being reported that 3 gun men are responsible for 7 9 12 deaths and 12 20 30 injuries at the Soldier Processing Center at Ft. Hood (near Killeen)
The latest report said that 1 shooter is in custody.
The entire base is on lock down (including the van-load of employees from our company who were visiting the post today — all are accounted for and safe in a secured building).
I’ll update later as more details become available. But for now, prayers for the families of the victims and the Ft. Hood community.

UPDATE 1 (2:54 p.m.) The AAS with a quick report here.
Seven people have been killed and another 12 are wounded in a mass shooting at Fort Hood in Killeen, a spokesperson said.
Greg Schannep, an aide to U.S. Rep. John Carter, said he was on the Army post to attend a graduation service. He said that as he neared the entrance of a building where the service was being held, a soldier with blood on his uniform ran past him and said a man was shooting.
Schannep said the shootings appeared to have occurred in a complex near a theater where the service was scheduled. He was with the injured soldier, who he said appeared to have been struck in the shoulder but did not have life-threatening injuries.
UPDATE 2 (3:32 p.m.) — KXAN out of Austin reports that up to 9 are dead.
UPDATE 3 (3:52) Reports are that one of the shooters in custody is a 40-year old US Army Major, with an Arabic sounding name. The first shooter is dead.
While it really is too early to start speculating, my initial gut reaction was another Sergeant Asan Akbar-like incident.
Latest numbers are 12 dead and 31 injured.
UPDATE 4 (4:50) — Correction on the earlier update — the first shooter who was killed is the 40-year old Major.
The other two shooters are now in custody. Fox News said they are moment away from reporting the name of the killed shooter.
UPDATE (4:54) — The Major’s name was Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan.

Wow, you guys really are simple minded. You’ve got such a simple answer for what happened, for why this man would do what he did, but you can’t accept it. You have to take the fact that he exercised his right to freedom of religion and turn him into some closet jihadist who was hell bent on bringing down the west. But I doubt it’s actually about religion for any of you, it’s that you’re so propagandized that you can’t even for one minute think something negative about the military or any of it’s members. If this man’s not a jihadist then he’s just an army psychiatrist who saw first hand the effects of combat on the soldiers who came to see him and knew that he couldn’t go through the hell he’d dreamed up, whether or not it was as difficult as he imagined it would be. And that means admiting that not everyone in the army is some bastian of unquestionable morality and patriotism, it means questioning yourself and your friends. If a trained Americn Army psychiatrist can snap, then anyone can.
So what did happen? He did what weak minded people sometimes do when they see no way out: he snapped plain and simple. He didn’t launch a jihad, he didn’t kill soldiers because he hated America, he reacted like a petulant child backed in corner with a gun and lashed out at every uniform he saw, because in his eyes they all represented what was destroying his mental state. But that won’t work for y’all either because crazy people aren’t the enemy and in this situation that means accepting that sometimes normal people do bad things for no reason. You need an enemy because you see the world in good and bad and not as it is, a world where things happen whether or not you like them and as much as you may try and squint your eyes and believe with all your heart that everyone who does good things is good and everyone who does bad things is evil, it won’t ever be true.
All things being equal the simplest answer is the right one. He broke, he killed people, it’s a tragedy, and hopefully he’ll stand trial and be made be to pay for his crimes. But that’s it. No kool-aid, no Muslim take over, no closet martyr waiting in the wings. The question is, why can’t you see it.

All the evidence shows that Hasan strategically and cooly planned this attack on American soldiers. He was seen in a convenience store surveillance video just hours before the attack in his all-white Muslim garb, serenely smiling as he went about his business. He gave away all of his possessions to his neighbor and paid her to clean his apartment on Friday, telling her that he was to be deployed that day. He had also earned a place on the FBI watchlist for posting anti-American radical rants online and was known to even praise suicide bombers. He argued with troops about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and had been confident that Obama would pull the troops out of both countries when he took office. The objective analysis of all evidence does not indicate that he suddenly just “snapped.” He had a plan that was in the making for months, maybe years, and he calmly put that plan into motion. Regarding your assertion that his religion had nothing to do with his attack, I suppose yelling “allahu akbar” to give his god the glory when he opened fire (just like suicide bombers and other jihadists) means absolutely nothing.
Also, objective logic never snubbed its nose at a “simple answer.”
