How Much Help Do We Owe Victims of Natural Disasters?

Time to move out of your FEMA Trailer and stand on your own two feet again

Time to move out of your FEMA Trailer and stand on your own two feet again

From the Houston Chronicle:

GALVESTON — At least five displaced families in Texas still in government-issued mobile homes nearly 14 months after Hurricane Ike must move.

Their agreements with the Federal Emergency Management Agency say the storm-relocated residents were not living up to terms of their agreements to do more to find long-term housing.

The residents have 60 days to relocate.

16 months (because you know they’ll use every single day of those 60 days before vacating) living for free off the government is several months too many.

I’m sorry you lost your home to Hurricane Ike. But nobody owes you anything. And if you haven’t picked yourself back up in 16 months, you didn’t try.

I’ll bet if an enterprising reporter looked into it a little closer, you’d find that those 5 families were probably already living (partially or fully) off of government assistance before Hurricane Ike.

The sad thing is, after they’re evicted from their FEMA trailer, they’ll likely land in some other type of government funded or assisted housing.

  1. I just can’t imagine living in one of those campers longer than a few days.

  2. My parents have already started building back at Crystal Beach. So they will have a new cabin by next summer.
