Jaded Heaven, an exceptionally talented writers and my favorite new blogger (who also happens to live here in Austin) has an interesting take in defense of publicly funded abortions:
Let’s have an abortion thread. Anybody game?
I’m not surprised to see abortion coverage slipped into the health care bill under current consideration in Congress. It only makes sense to proponents of the public option to cover a woman’s decision to suck the life out of her womb at her neighbor’s expense. And why not? We’re expected to collectively house, feed, clothe, educate and possibly imprison her ill-conceived git at public expense if she’s irresponsible.
I had a discussion many years ago with a man I still respect and love, one who is solidly conservative, a republican stalwart, a fierce Rush acolyte, a true red meat, ideological right winger.
We were discussing abortion and he told me that he would rather pay, through his tax dollars, for a woman’s early abortion than raise her child for life. Declared it was less expensive in the end. It all came down to money and the eventual degradation of wider society being populated by a raft of dysfunctional, unwanted, poorly raised, low I.Q., uneducated individuals voting, corrupting and altering the fundamental basis of our republic. Figuring that he and the country would be better served overall by publicly funding abortion, he chose spending a cheap $300 to drain a lax womb over the tens of thousands it would take to support a wider pool of neglected welfare babies who would ultimately undermine his tax paying vote and alter the state of our nation with their warped, subsidized, ignorant mindsets.
Interesting. And I’m inclined to agree.

Why do people assume that women and girls have babies because they cannot afford abortions? That’s absurd. We live in a country where even the poorest have quite a bit of disposable income.
While he makes a compelling argument, which is the Margaret Sanger argument (the argument that liberals support but will not utter), it’s not enough to sway me from my believe in the sanctity of life.
More needs to be done to discourage out of wedlock pregnancies.
Restoring public shame on unwed mothers would be a good start.
Takes 2 to make a baby! If you restore public shame on the unwed mothers what would you suggest for the unwed fathers?
Pardon my omission, the fathers should be shamed and made responsible for the child’s well being, also.
Your forgiven… it was just an oversight! I think that if self value and self respect were taught there would be less unwed mothers.
The values the young ones have, which in my opinion is very little, and self respect is out the window.
I blame the lack of value and self respect on the parents. Not all but most.
Agree BIG SIS, that’s a bit lop-sided cause Nothing would happen to the Dads.
Well Robbie, I agree with about everything posted on this board. Except your belief on the sanctity of life is disturbing! Life starts in the womb. Be grateful somebody didn’t end your life with a piano wire. We have had foster children who by this article would lie
in some waste facility. These young men and women
will have a positive influence in a very dark world!
Be very careful in judging.
Just to be clear, while I am pro-choice, I also believe abortion to be horribly and morally reprehensible. I would never have any part of it in my own life.
But I also believe that abortion is ultimately a moral choice and the government has no business legislating morality (not that that stops them from doing it many aspects of our lives).
I guess it’s six of one/half a dozen of the other. The gov. isn’t banning abortion, they are just refusing to pay for elective surgery. You may say it’s the same result, but why is it okay to legislate that people who do object to have to pay for it?
Again, people who want abortions are more than capable of paying for them their selves.
The people you are attempting to target – are not having babies because they lack the funds to have abortions. They are getting pregnant and having children because they want to.
I completely agree.
My boy John John Culberson, current Houston District 7 Rep, is anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, AND ANTI-CHURCH STATE SEPARATION!
Talk about the govt trying to tell me how to live!
The goal is not to punish one side or the other but to stop out of wedlock births by those under 20 and who haven’t finished high school.
You are correct Anonymous, we need them to finish school and be productive members of society.
A return of values and self worth would help achieve that desired goal.
I never thought of the fact that it probably has killed off millions of liberal voters. interesting. I suppose that is why they support the flood from across the border.
Pardon me if I respectfully disagree with Jaded Heaven’s opinion.
This is one of those things I have changed my mind on with time and maturity. I cannot support abortion and certainly do not want my tax dollars paying for it. The Repubs seemed to indicate during the debate that the conscience clause wasn’t even clear in the Senate Bill. I’d like to try to see them force a pro-life health professional or org. to participate in an abortion. There will be “hell” to pay if that happens.
I think i would be more in favor of a “one time” $5,000 payout for anyone volunteering for sterilization surgery…and even that might be a little too much to spend. Government funded abortion will never solve the problem of welfare babies and generational welfare dependency. Address the issues and policies that allow people to “take advantage of the system” and perhaps the money saved could pay for more serializations.
Thanks for the link, Robbie. I’m flattered.
When I saw that tax funded abortion was included in the plan the House approved, it reminded me of this conversation I had twenty years ago with a staunch conservative. It was an interesting perspective that I had never considered and I thought it was worthy of discussion in light of current events.
My position on abortion is pro-life. I believe abortion is murder. I don’t like abortion and I certainly don’t want to fund anyone’s abortion through my tax dollars.
I also don’t believe that I should be responsible financially for housing, feeding, clothing or providing health care for anyone else’s offspring through government redistribution of my tax dollars.
Considering the wide array of convenient birth control methods, I don’t see any excuse for 99% of the abortions taking place in our country. I wish women would start taking responsibility for their sexuality, it’s just not that difficult.
