Texas Tribune Equates Murdered Pregnant Soldier to an Abortion

The first hint of some political bias at the Tribune comes in today’s The Brief written by Reeve Hamilton:

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood gunman, is being charged with 13 counts of murder, but U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says that’s not enough.

Todd Gillman of The Dallas Morning News reports, “As Hutchison points out, one of the soldiers killed in the rampage a week ago was pregnant: Private Francheska Velez, who had already served in Korea and in Iraq, was expecting her first child.”

Hutchison argues that the unborn child warrants a 14th murder count. The thing is, Hutchison supports abortion rights, which, though she has voted to restrict access and funding, some GOP primary voters might find untenable. The question is: Will those voters get wind of this latest suggestion, and will they care?

Excuse me? WTF?

As in, what the hell does Kay Bailey Hutchison’s views on abortion have to do with the fact that PFC Velez and her baby were MURDERED by an Islamist jihadi?

You do understand the difference, don’t you Reeve? Abortion is a choice that women make. Francheska didn’t make a choice to have her baby murdered. I’m really curious how you made the jump from murder to abortion?

Because, from where I’m sitting, the only explanation is that you used this as an opportunity to slam KBH’s contradictory stance on abortion.

What KBH was pointing out is that Texas law prohibits intentionally causing the death of an “individual,” and defines “individual” as including “an unborn child at every stage of gestation from fertilization until birth” under the Prenatal Protection Act that passed in 2003.

This law’s purpose “serves the State’s legitimate secular interest in protecting unborn children from the criminal acts of others.”

None of this has anything to do with abortion. But that didn’t stop you from injecting your political opinion into the equation.

I’ll bet if the Texas Tribune allowed comments on its stories, I wouldn’t be the first one to point this out to you.

Frankly, I think it was a bit of a cheap shot.

  1. How long before some politically correct moron decides that the shooter’s (I refuse to say his name) religious rights were violated because he was shot by a female cop?

And riddle me this, Batman: why is Fox news allowed to walk through the shooter’s apartment showing things left behind after the FBI investigated it? Things like a shredder, his medications, his prayer rugs, his clothing? Why is it that the woman he gave things to has reported that she has never been questioned by the FBI or CID?

His medications for crap’s sake. Are those medications not evidence?

Are we seeing the start of a FUBAR investigation that will try to cover this administration’s ass by not calling this an act of terrorism?

  2. So, why wasn’t he charged with a 14th count of murder pursuant to 18 USC 1841, the Baby Conner Law? The indictment needs to be amended.

Just a bit of a cheap shot?

    That’s putting it pretty mildly!

  4. I don’t care what Hutchison said. I know that, a few days ago, when I learned that Velez was pregnant I just matter of factly thought “Then Numbnuts Hasan killed 14 people, not 13.”

  6. The Trib rain a horrible hit piece against the soldiers of Fort Hood a few days ago, calling them ‘poor and uneducated’. Their source, a ‘resisters’ cafe in Killeen.

  9. What the Trib could have said, in retrospect, is that since the murderer was a member of the U.S.Army, funded by the federal gubmint, this was a government funded abortion.

  10. Jim Howard – I checked. There wasn’t. Though, it has little bearing on this discussion. Still, don’t want to be inaccurate.
