Bad news for Austin’s Pastrami King, Marc Katz, who — up until a day ago — was still the only Democrat who had expressed any interest in running against David Dewhurst for Lt. Governor of Texas.
I’m pretty good friends with Marc Katz, and have talked to him about his campaign on numerous occasions, and as early as last Friday, he still hadn’t heard any rumors of any other Dems throwing their hats into the Lt. Governor’s race.
Yesterday, Labor leader Linda Chavez-Thompson said that she is considering entering the race, too.Texas is an exceptionally anti-labor union state, and Chavez-Thompson is a former executive vice president of the AFL-CIO, and has spent most of her life working in Labor. That is enough to sink her candidacy before it ever gets off the ground.
But I think Ronnie Earle, Former Travis County District Attorney, immediately becomes the front-runner for the right to lose to David Dewhurst in November.
Some highlights from Ronnie Earle’s career as DA include:
Sweetheart Deal
Krisit Willis, a former staffer for U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D – TX), admitted stealing about $168,000 from Rep. Doggett’s campaign.
She also admitted to stealing money from the Capital Area Democratic Women and from Democrat Andy Brown, then a candidate for the Texas House.
Willis could have (and should have) been given a maximum sentence of 20 years in a state prison for her crimes. Instead, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle accepted a plea bargain from Willis.
Willis will end up spending as little as 10 days in jail in a deal that lets her serve 48 hours on weekends and get credited for three days, plus three days of good behavior credit. She also can then petition to have the whole matter expunged from her record upon repayment.
This is the same crooked Ronnie Earle who has abused the power of his elected office time-and-time again to exact baseless political retribution against his opposition.
In his witchhunt against Tom Dealy, Earle convened six Grand Juries in an attempt to indict Delay. None of the first five Grand Juries could so much as indict a ham sandwich, much less Tom Delay. Not to be deterred, Mr. Earle convened a sixth Grand Jury (and I was wondering why my taxes where so high here in Travis County last year). Mr. Earle was finally able to find a Grand Jury who would hand down the indictment that he was begging for.
Two dirty old politicians
But even then, the grand jury only came through with a vaguely worded indictment for the last-resort charge of “conspiracy”.
What do you suppose Earle’s proposed sentence would have been if Willis had been the employee of a Republican? What if she had been working for Delay? Somehow I doubt very much that it Earle would have been so lenient.
Political Witch Hunts
Ronnie Earle’s 1994 indictment against Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) was quickly dismissed and his charges in the 1980s against former Attorney General Jim Mattox (D)— another political foe of Earle’s fell apart at trial.
Frankly, I’d be happier with the Pastrami King at Lt Gov than I would a bitter, partisan hack like Ronnie Earle.

If Earle were to ever gain this office, we would know that Hell has frozen over.
Also, Tom Delay sends his regards to the pathetic tool Earle.
Ronnie Earle’s name on a statewide ballot will be enough to sink him.
Even through I lived in Austin for 11 years and am familiar with Mr. Earle’s work, his name and shenanigans are know here in the piney woods.
He will lose big time against Dewhurst.
Earle is one of the lefts liberal lapdog lawyers. The left couldn’t beat DeLay politically so they had to do it through the legal system with trumped up charges. With the help of the media it was blown up into a conspiracy type scandal.
After the elections were over and Delay was taken down charges were dropped since they were baseless and the media didnt even say a peep.
Fuck you Earle. You might win Travis fag haven county but nothing else.
