Tax-Friendly Texas Lures Another Big Business Away from Another State

I wonder if this story:

Hanger Orthopedics Group said today it will move its headquarters from Bethesda, Md., to Austin later this year. It is Austin’s biggest economic development win in a long time.

The American-Statesman reported last week that Hanger was negotiating a 75,000 square foot lease at the Domain development — enough space for 250 to 300 employees. Mayor Lee Leffingwell said the city was in discussions about incentives and that a City Council vote could come soon.

In a news release this morning, Hanger said it had considered several cities before deciding on Austin.

The company said the move would be completed in the third quarter.

“Hanger’s new Austin headquarters will provide ample space for future growth, improved operational efficiency, and an enhanced quality of life for corporate employees,” the release said. “Austin’s central location in the United States will also facilitate improved communication with Hanger’s national footprint of more than 700 patient care centers and supporting operational locations.”

Has anything to do with this story:

The Tax Foundation’s 2009 State Business Tax Climate Index, a ranking of the 50 state tax systems that provides a roadmap for state lawmakers concerned with keeping their states tax-competitive, ranks Texs as the 7th best tax state in the nation for businesses.

Maryland is 45th on that last, behind only the dying economic states of New Jersey (the worst), New York, California, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

That’s 300 new jobs coming to Texas. That’s a bunch of tax dollars going to the state of Texas.

Make no doubt about it…this win for Texas is a direct result of Conservative leadership in our state, and our continued Conservative fiscal polices. The types of sound fiscal policy that Democrat Bill White would try to destroy.

  1. Now if we could only convince Ford or GM to relocate their operations to right to work Texas, they could get their business in order more quickly.

        • Fallacy – Personal Attack -

A personal attack is committed when a person substitutes abusive remarks for evidence when attacking another person’s claim or claims. This line of “reasoning” is fallacious because the attack is directed at the person making the claim and not the claim itself. The truth value of a claim is independent of the person making the claim. After all, no matter how repugnant an individual might be, he or she can still make true claims.

Not all ad Hominems are fallacious. In some cases, an individual’s characteristics can have a bearing on the question of the veracity of her claims. For example, if someone is shown to be a pathological liar, then what he says can be considered to be unreliable. However, such attacks are weak, since even pathological liars might speak the truth on occasion.

In general, it is best to focus one’s attention on the content of the claim and not on who made the claim. It is the content that determines the truth of the claim and not the characteristics of the person making the claim.
