These three Republicans are running in the GOP primary in HD-47 for the chance to unseat 2-term Democrat incumbent Volinda Bolton:
- Holly Turner — attorney
- David Sewell — also an attorney
- Paul Workman — for over thirty five years has been engaged in the construction of commercial buildings
HD-47 is the most Republican-leaning district in Travis County, and without Obama's coattails to run on, Bolton will be defeated soundly by whichever one of the three GOP candidates emerges from the primary.
My wife and I moved into HD-47 at the first of the year, and since then I've taken a hard look at all three candidates and have decided to endorse and vote for Paul Workman.
There are three primary reasons for supporting Workman over Turner or Sewell:
- He's not an attorney. Frankly, I think we have enough attorneys in government already. In fact, we have too many. Instead, Mr. Workman has earned an honest living, working with his hands, building things and creating real jobs for others. I don't have a lot of regard for people who have never really worked for a living. Professors and lawyers are the first two professions to come to mind.
- He's a US Army Reserves veteran. There is no greater service to our great country than serving in our armed forces. As a fellow US Army veteran, Mr. Workmen gets an automatic degree of respect from me that Turner and Sewell simply can't match.
- He won't be a career politician. I'm not sure what Mr. Workman's age is…but he's got to be close (if not older than) 60. He's never held office before, which means that he's spent his life working for a living. Not only earning an honest living for himself, but creating good jobs for others. I have an inherent distrust of people who go into politics at a young age…before they've ever really gone out and earned a living and learned about running a company, managing budgets, schedules, and people.
Mr. Workman will bring a lifetime of real-life experience working in our community to build jobs and take care of his neighbors. His opponents bring a lifetime of academics and lawyering. Holly Turner just moved here with her husband a couple of years ago…seemingly to do nothing other than run for office (her husband Chris ran for city council and lost in 2007.) I'm not even sure if Sewell is still running (is he?). Because I can't find any evidence of a campaign outside of his web site.

I completely agree. Everything that I have heard from/about Workman he seems like a class act. The guy has accomplished a ton in numerous arenas and is the kind of person that we need at the capitol.
Roughly 40% of our legislature is made up of attorneys already. We need people up there who have experience in the Texas business climate and can provide our state with common sense, practical solutions.
Paul you have my vote!
This is the kind of elected official we need.
Workman doesn’t want employers using e-verify to make sure illegals aren’t being hired. Hardly a conservative.
Interesting.
Any confirming links for that info?
I’m not certain that the federal government E-verify program is the answer, either. It does little more than use the information from the I-9 form (which Texas already uses to screen immigration status).
Even the Federal government has conceded that there are serious flaws with the program.
Said it at the SW Austin Republican forum 2 weeks ago.
Can’t find anything about that, but here is part 1 of the KXAN HD 47 GOP debate. I haven’t watched all three, not my district, but I would think that something as serious as a GOP candidate being against e-verify would come up.
