Gen David Petraeus

A man of remarkable achievement

The UK Telegraph does something much better than any single US news paper or mainstream media outlet does — report honestly on the state of American politics, especially on the majority Democrats in Congress and the White House.

Today, they have a fantastic article about the man that I  hope and pray runs for President in 2012 — David Petraeus. Their lead:

Americans have never been so disgusted with their politicians. More than three-quarters of Americans disapprove of Congress. President Barack Obama’s favourability ratings have slumped to below 50 per cent and he is no longer trusted or believed by many who voted for him.

Republicans are faring little better and the growth of the Tea Party movement reflects the widespread disgust with Washington and the political class. Incumbents across the board are vulnerable in November’s mid-term elections.

Many voters yearn for an outsider, someone with authenticity, integrity and proven accomplishment. Someone who has not spent their life plotting how to ascend the greasy pole, adjusting every utterance for maximum political advantage.

Obama has zero chance of winning re-election in 2012. Hell, he might not even survive a primary challenge. If an honest man who is not a career politician were to run — and so happens to be a highly regarded and authentic American hero and already a house hold name — I think he’d win running away.

And that man is Gen. David Petraeus.

Unlike any of the other people being mentioned as 2012 hopeful, General David Petraeus has earned an honest and honorable living:

Where better to look for Obama’s successor, therefore, than in the uniformed ranks? Not since 1952, when a certain Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War, was elected President, have the chances of a military man winning the White House been more propitious.

Within those ranks, no one stands out like General David Petraeus, head of United States Central Command, leader of 230,000 troops and commander of United States forces in two wars. Having masterminded the Iraq surge, the stunning military gambit that seized victory from the jaws of defeat, he is now directing an equally daunting undertaking in Afghanistan.

Petraeus, 57, has survived the collapse of his parachute 60 feet above the ground. After he was shot in the chest during a training exercise and endured five hours surgery, the then battalion commander refused to lie in hospital recuperating. Demanding that the tubes be removed from his arm, he declared: “I am not the norm.”

A Princeton PhD, he has revolutionised the way America fights its wars, inculcating the doctrine of counter-insurgency in a new generation of officers who have finally put the ghost of Vietnam to rest. At West Point he qualified for medical school just to prove he could, never bothering to apply.

There may not be a single person in this country more qualified and more capable of being President than Gen. Petraeus — the problem is he’s probably too honest and too decent to be President of our country:

Petraeus, wire-thin and an accomplished runner, is known for being one of the most competitive men on the planet and he lacks nothing in the self-assurance department. No one has ever accused him of being deficient in his sense of patriotism.

Whether as an independent or as Republican, he could be a powerful presidential candidate and a potentially accomplished President. He may not want to run but if the clamour to draft him grows he might just find the call of duty – not to mention the contest of a lifetime – difficult to resist.

  1. He would get my vote, especially if he promised to make Super Sarah the Sec. of Energy.
He’s tough, smart and a proven leader with exemplary executive skills, everything that our pResident isn’t.

    • General info:
The shitbird(Steven) replied to me and I deleted it twice.
He is a psycho and I want nothing to do with him.
Therefore, I will not talk to him, he cannot talk to me, and he for damn sure isn’t going to reply to a comment of mine.

      • N02LIBERALS, I think Steven has a bit of a man crush on you.

        • Nah, he’s just a psycho that can’t learn.

        • LOL!

          Too funny RONKER

        • I guess that could be it also No2. He just seems real persistent in trying to get your attention.

        • No, Ronker, I found your comment funny, so I replied.

        • Ronker, ever since I exposed him as a fraud/liar/plagiarist months ago, he has tried his best to show how idiotic he can be.
If other people choose to interact with him, fine, but as I stated clearly above there he can have no interaction with me or reply to my comments. He reverted to his talking to himself on a thread by hiding behind anonymous on one comment and responding as Steven in the reply.
The boy has serious mental issues.

        • So now he is replying to my comment under Anonymous I guess. I’ve read some of the comments he has made and I do agree with you. He is a wackjob.

        • Ronker, a total wackjob. He has even tried using multiple proxies after his ip addresses gave him away.
I don’t care what his views are, his lying and using other peoples work without attribution destroyed any credibility he might have accrued when he first found this blog.
When I say he doesn’t learn, he tried to reply to me again, and *poof* goes his reply. The boy ain’t right.

        • Yes, Ronker, I have to reply under anonymous.

          Steven

        • No2, I have always found you to be an intelligent, thoughtful individual and have enjoyed reading your contributions. I have no problem believing that Steven is psycho.

        • Thank you, I appreciate your kind words.

  2. For someone who says he’s not running, he gives numerous speeches and accepts a lot of awards. He’s a frequent guest on news shows and now has a glossy feature spread about HIM in Vanity Fair, putting him more in the pop spotlight. He appears to be forthright, deeply intelligent and a family man, but it would be due diligence for the party planning to run him to check him out very closely. Has he become so powerful and popular that he thinks he’s untouchable?

    • We could do a lot worse for sure, but I really wish we’d get some candidates with real private sector experience (being a lawyer doesn’t count).

As excellent a man as General Petraeus is, I doubt if he really understands how wealth is created. He’s been in a top down command organization for 35 years after all.

I say this as someone with 20 years in the military and 15 in the private sector.

  3. Like all good generals, (and he is a damn good general) he has kept his mouth shut regarding his own personal opinions.

So anyone who is assuming that GEN Petraeus is a conservative just because he’s a career Army man is … well, they’re assuming. And we all know what assume does.

The general’s military record speaks for itself: he’s an outstanding Soldier. But while I have tremendous respect and admiration for him, that doesn’t necessarily mean that I would support him for public office.

And (perhaps most importantly), he has repeatedly said that he’s not going to run for office, and I believe he’s telling the truth.

    • Good points Colin, we don’t know what his political leanings are. Many of us thought we knew Gen. Powell, and look how badly that turned out.
When he decides to retire, maybe then we will know more about how he views the world, as I’m certain publishers will be trampling each other at his door.

  4. You were saying????? About WHO???? General “BE-TRAY-US”???

    • Ummm….no thank you. We’re Good with Obama…we don’t need a FAKER like former CIA director Petreaus.

  5. Wow, don’t you feel like a dumb ass now?

  6. Wow, this article is pretty funny in retrospect eh? Obama might not even win a primary challenge in 2012? Yup, that didn’t happen. And then Patraeus demonstrates his amazing character by endangering national security by engaging in extramarital affairs. LOL.
