Because when you only have seconds to spare, the cops are at least minutes away.
And guns are the great equalizer when you’re 80-years old and some punk kid tries to break into your house (especially when said punk kid also has a gun):
An 80-year-old Chicago man shot and killed an armed man who broke into his two-story house in a pre-dawn home invasion Wednesday on the city’s West Side.
At about 5:20 a.m., the homeowner and his wife, also in her 80s, discovered the intruder entering their home through a back door. The homeowner, who had a gun, confronted and killed the burglar on the doorstep, police said. Cops said the intruder also fired his gun during the struggle.
“It’s a good thing they had a gun, or they might be dead,” said Curtis Thompson, who lives next door to the couple, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
I am sure that the intruder was just some old white guy upset with Obamacare or something…
As Ace points out, the homeowner might be in trouble since he used a handgun to stop the threat and save his and his wife’s life while defending their home and property. Now why on earth would they be in trouble for doing that, you might ask.
Well, because they live in Chicago, where having a handgun, even in your home, is illegal:
No charges have been filed against the homeowner, but Chicago currently has a statute outlawing the possession of handguns. Its legality is currently being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
A high-profile Chicago attorney has already stepped forward offering to represent the man pro bono if he faces charges for possessing a weapon.
“Self-defense isn’t just a right, it’s a duty,” said attorney Joel Brodsky. “If this man is prosecuted for saving his own life it’s not just a travesty, it’s justice turned inside out.”
All the more reason to overthrow this unconstitutional law in Chicago (someone should ask Barry Obama at his next television appearance — which is in what?…5-minutes from now? — if he thinks that this homeowner should have been allowed to own a handgun with which to defend his life and home).
Oh, and did I mention the old geezer is a Veteran of the United States Army, too? Note to dumb-ass crooks and thugs — when looking for homes to target, try to avoid the ones that have old work pickup trucks in the driveway with US Army (or USMC) stickers in the windows. These guys are almost always armed and trained — and they will ruin your entire day.
Instead, you should look for the homes with Toyota Prius (what the hell is the plural of “Prius?”) and “I Vote Democrat” signs, as they are most likely to roll over while you rob and rape them and less likely to have guns (or the will) to oppose you.

I was reading about this poor guy in the UK. Burglars bust in and he and his wife and two small children barricade themselves in an upper bedroom and call the police. The police don’t respond for over 2 hours. They sit up there and listen as the burglars clean out their hour. They can’t do a thing about it without going to jail themselves.
Then again, I don’t know if we can brag. Those union thugs that swarmed that house in Maryland and the police wouldn’t do anything about it. A few gunshots in the air might have cleared them out.
supposedly Barry says the US. government fully supports a UN treaty on guns. One of the my fellow webboarders elsewhere has looked high and low on the intarwebs and apparently neither the US government [in the form of the State Dept btw] nor the UN has released the text of this treaty anywhere to the general public. do the words “there’s something rotten in the state of denmark” hold any meaning for you?
okay I realize this is bad form but…
hello..the State Dept job is to implement US policy on foriegn soil, not trying to impose the rest of the worlds idea of what OUR laws should be on us.
That’s why this reliance on international law by Justice Kennedy is harmful. Also, his “national consensus” argument in Graham v. Florida was a lie. Someone dug up all the research he relied on and the responses by the states are not what Kennedy represented in his opinion.
I have been watching this in my peripheral vision. I have yet to see a mechanism where they can get this treaty by the Senate without them actually voting on it.
No way…no how the Senate approves this power grab by the NWO.
To have effect on the states, the treaty had to be voted on or be self-executing. (Everything I’ve learned from Medellin.)
And for all the BMW, the senate still hasn’t ratified the Vienna treaty.
First of all, my best wishes to the unnamed resident that defended his life, his wife’s and their property from a criminal attack.
Secondly, with regard to his being prosecuted, the city will probably file, knowing that there is a USSC decision pending and should be announced in June. McDonald vs. Chicago is the case I blogged on here back in January. The transcript can be found at this blog.
I won’t hold my breath that what should be a slam-dunk victory for gun rights, as we know how virulently anti-gun the leftists on the USSC are. We can only hope for a 5-4 decision and that the unnamed hero in this recent case of self-defense will be vindicated of an upside down world prosecution.
