On September 11, 1988, Derrick Leon Jackson murdered Forrest Henderson and Alan Wrotenberry — both of whom were Houston Grand Opera singers — in Henderson’s Houston-area apartment.
Tonight, 22 way-too-long years later (only 12 of which were spent on Death Row), Derrick Jackson will pay for those crimes with his life in the Texas Death Chamber in Huntsville, TX.
Fact of the Crime
The face of a soon-to-be-dead cold-blooded killer
From the Texas Attorney General:
On Monday, September 12, 1988,Alan Wrotenberry failed to appear for work at Deer Park Elementary School, where he was employed as a music teacher. At 9 a.m., the school principal contacted Henderson’s apartment manager to check on Wrotenberry. The manager unlocked Henderson’s apartment door and found nothing disturbed in the living room and kitchen. He proceeded to one of the bedrooms, pushed open the door, and saw a body covered with blood. He promptly left and called 911.
Police officers arrived at the apartment soon thereafter and detected no signs of forced entry. They found Wrotenberry’s and Henderson’s bodies in their respective bedrooms at opposite ends of the apartment.
Henderson’s nude body was lying face-down in his bed, and Wrotenberry’s body, clad only in a pair of swimming trunks, was lying on the floor of his bedroom. Police found a bloody metal bar in the hallway and a bloody knife in the kitchen sink. Blood was all over the bedroom walls, doors, and curtains. Both victims’ wallets were missing, and Henderson’s car was gone. Two or three days later the car was recovered after a chase following a burglary at a mall, but the driver was not apprehended. Apart from the burglary, police recovered no other evidence from the car.
A forensic pathologist testified that Alan Wrotenberry suffered a severed carotid artery, cuts to the vertebrae, and at least three blows to the back of the head with a narrow blunt instrument, such as a pipe. Forrest Henderson received a shallow, non-fatal cut to the neck, defensive wounds on both arms, a six-inch fracture of the skull from blunt force, and multiple stab wounds to the torso. Fixed lividity in both bodies signified that both victims were dead for more than eight hours before they were found.
Despite finding blood samples and 20 good identifiable fingerprints at the crime scene, police didn’t have a lead until 1995, when they upgraded to a new fingerprint system with an expanded database, which matched Jackson’s fingerprints with prints found on a beer can and a glass tumbler.

Let’s talk about that for a second.
How sick and cold blooded of an animal is Jackson? So much so, that after brutally beating and stabbing to death two men, he stopped to enjoy a cold beer and a glass of whiskey.
Get that image in your head.
Now, I have a better image for you to replace that one — picture Derrick Jackson, sometime around 6:00 p.m. Huntsville, TX Time (HTT), wearing a white TDC prison uniform, strapped to a gurney with an IV needle embedded in a vien in one of his arms. Makes me feel a little bit better knowing that this vile, sick man will never again hurt another human being.

If you can stand to read it, are Derrick Jackson’s own words, posted just 5 days ago, on his pending execution.
He blames society for his pending death. Calls his execution “murder.” Talks about how fortunate he is to die so peacefully when so many people die “in agonizing pain and tragedy.” You know…like his two victims.
However, Jackson never once does mention his victims or his crimes, or the fact that he is guilty of these murders.
I pray that my last days (whenever they are to be) will be beautiful one’s that will last forever (within others).
The murder aspect of it all can’t be overlooked, if that is how my death should occur, but it can be accepted when you think of other ways people die in agonizing pain and tragedy and why?
As I was given my execution date I found out a young girl of 7 or 8 years old was killed, because of the wheels her father had on his car. I definitely have lived longer than I would if I had been killed senselessly and tragically in the streets at a young age.
So very many lives have ended before mine has and I always give thanks when I pray for each and every day, because it’s only by the grace of god that I’m still here and plan to be for a very long time to come.
His victims were unavailable for comment nor could I find a record of their own thoughts on their pending death at the hands of Jackson.

Next on the schedule is a biggie: Peter Cantu, who was involved in one the most brutal and gut wrenching murders in Houston history when he and his friend gang-raped, tortured, and strangled to death Elizabeth Pena (16) and Jennifer Ertman (15).
Sean Derrick O’Brien was the first to be executed for that crime, back in 2006. Jose Meddellin, the ring-leader, was put to death in 2008.
If I can arrange it, I’m going to try to be in Huntsville to report live from the execution. I’ve been following and writing about this case for nearly 5 long years, and Cantu will be the last of the men involved who will be put to death, and I want to be there to show my support for the two victim’s family and for the death penalty in general.

I have seen a death certificate for an executed inmate. There is a difference between the cause of death and the manner of death. In the case of execution, the manner of death is ‘homicide’. When I asked the M.E. why that was, he said ‘The meant to kill him, didnt they?’.

You have expressed absolute certainty that Jackson is innocent, so this must mean that you were there at the time of Wrotenbery’s and Henderson’s murders, right? I mean, that is what you are saying . . . By your logic, you would have had to have been there yourself when those two men were murdered to know that it was not Jackson who murdered them. So, were you the “actual murderer” or just an accomplice to the “real murderer”? After all, in one breath you are saying that for anyone to know for certain, they would have had to have been there — and in the next breath you are implying that you are the only person who can make a sound judgment on Jackson’s guilt or innocence . . .

As far as the actual evidence against Jackson, who are you to say the 20 identifiable fingerprints collected from the crime scene were falsified, as you claimed to Michele B. below? I suppose they somehow obtained enough blood from Jackson to plant on the towels from the crime scene as well? Were you there when the evidence was collected or in the lab when the evidence was logged into the computer or in the crime investigators’ office when the fingerprints and DNA were matched in the database?
Blood samples and 20 identifiable fingerprints were collected from the crime scene, but the Houston Police Department (“HPD”) was unable to develop a suspect. In 1995, HPD upgraded to a new fingerprint system with an expanded database. The new system matched appellant with prints lifted from a beer can and a glass tumbler in Henderson’s bedroom. A bloody print found on Henderson’s bedroom door also matched appellant. An expert in blood-spatter interpretation testified that the bloody fingerprint could have been formed only by touching a blood drop while the blood was still wet–as opposed to a blood drop landing on an old fingerprint.
An HPD serologist testified that type-B blood was found on a bedroom door. Appellant is blood-type B; both victims were blood-type A. Only these blood types were detected at the crime scene. The State’s DNA expert testified that appellant’s DNA profile matched DNA isolated from blood stains on a red towel and a beige towel located in Henderson’s bathroom. The odds that another African-American would possess the same profile is one in 7.2 million. Further, DNA analysis could not exclude appellant as a contributor of the blood mixture covering the metal bar.

I received the following letter today from Derrick Jackson #999263. It is
an Open Letter To All.
Death Row! It’s hard to explain (especially here in Texas), but to be
honest, I personally would have preferred to have been murdered at the
time of sentencing. I say this, not because I prefer to be dead (I truly
want to live with a passion). I love life, but the appeals process is no
more than a torturous traumatizing path to a truly saddenly sick end. I
believe in God, and believe me when I say that it will be an “act of God”
if I am ever to be a free man, but I do have
hope, and I pray. I am a blessed man to have the insight that I do. My
reality is a sick curse, for each and every individual it’s different
(being on death row), but all of us are insane. You have to lose a bit of
your sanity to maintain the rest of it, like a flu shot. Every day I
accept the fact that it’s OK for me to go just a little bit crazy to keep
from breaking down and losing it completely.
I don’t have a wife or children, very much family, or many friends, and it
may seem strange to hear, but (for me) that’s good, because of the type of
person that I am. My existence is a very sick one. Just last night I got
a visit from my younger brother. I wrote him a letter a few weeks ago
being a bit desperate and demanding.that he come visit. I personally feel
he should come every week, but I realize that no one owes me nothing, and
that he has a life to live in a crazy world. He
told me I should write to my mother, father, step mother, and aunts (most
of them have never been to visit me) so that they could feel guilty (I
guess he was feeling guilty). I would never try to make a person feel
guilty in this way, especially not those I love, even though they seem to
have forgotten about me or maybe just don’t know how to deal with seeing
me here trapped in a miserable existence. My two younger brothers and my
mother are all I can consider my family at this point in my life. I’m
from a poor family, so there is very little
(nearly nothing) that they can do financially, but the moral support, no
matter how painful, is my reason for existence. I feel their pain and
frustration, and I can see it in their eyes, but they are all I have, and
living daily in solitary confinement cells is another madness that a man
must deal with that has nothing to do with the death penalty.
Here on the Polunsky unit here in Livingston, Texas, extreme deprivation
is used to punish, control, and dehumanize a man. Mental games are played
by most of the guards (including ranking officers) that a prisoner daily
comes in contact with. You no longer have human and /or civil rights.
Personally I’ve felt as if I am a part of a sick experiment. To have a
healthy conscious mind is a beautiful gift to all humans, and to use it is
a gift to our world. To attempt to take or destroy this gift is criminal.
How can I say being a death row prisoner? What if I can tell you that
I’m not guilty? The fact is, I’m
not!!! Another fact is that I can’t prove it, and that’s why I am here!
Two people I know nothing of or about were brutally beaten and stabbed to
death – that was proven at my trial. Politics’ corruption, me being poor,
naive, ignorant to the unjust system in Texas is why I am sitting here
writing these words and not living as I should be, but merely existing.
I feel that the justice system and society have let me down. The
oppression that is my life, I cannot describe. I won’t let it control me,
I can’t, so at times, I go a little bit crazy, just so I can cope. I’m a
very positive person. I love to see people smile, and whenever possible,
I will share one. There are definitely times that I will smile to keep
from crying. I feel that everyone deals with or has dealt with tragedy at
some point and time in their lives (these experiences define us
individually). Not too many people can choose the way they
leave the face of the earth, and on one lives forever. As I’ve said, I
love to live life and to love, but I’m not afraid to die.
I have no sense of panic or distress as I sit on death row now. People
die daily. Every day takes a positive focus, and I’m going to try to be
the son my parents raised to Love, the brother my brothers have Loved as
we’ve grown, and the man I am proud to be. I’m going to do this with not
very much more than “sickness” – sickness that is my reality. I suffer
from diabetes and must take two insulin shots daily, but this
sickness that is the system is what is taking its toll on me and many
others who sit on death row.
Texas is the execution capital of the world! I’m not able to give you
specifics and statistics (for those who are interested, they are made
known by other sources). I am writing this to express as well as inform,
and I can inform you that Texas is out of control. Anybody (anyday) that
is a speaker of acting on the death penalty should be speaking of and
acting on Texas. This is nothing less than mass murder
going on here!! I know, more than many, of the corrupt, powerful,
political structure. Then add the money, and it definitely makes for a
seemingly impossible fight to win (for justice), but I see it (Texas) as a
big bully picking on kids. Sure one bully can bully one, two, even three
or more kids, but when or if all the kids come, they the bully finds it
more reasonable to back off and go away. I basically have no
help in my situation, and I often will hear people say or get a letter
from someone advising me to organize – put those who are willing to help
in contact with each other. I pass that advice on to all reading these
words who are truly sincere. There are probably more groups and
organizations that are not doing what they should or could do to help us
(condemned men) in effective ways. A lot is said that sounds good, and
men are being murdered here in Texas so regularly that it’s seemingly
acceptable. Prisoners who’ve had no proper defense during trial, legally
retarded men, men that have been set up by aggressive state prosecutors
(that are elevated in the political structure according to their number of
convictions), are being murdered. They are killing men here that have
compelling evidence of innocence – not hearing the valid
arguments of the accused or convicted. Defense attorneys appointed by the
courts (if they are sincere) are disgracefully underpaid and not allowed
the advantage of investigators, etc. to fight for justice. It is not even
required by the Texas courts for the court appointed attorneys to even
defend their clients here in Texas now. These are the things that are
causing the deaths of many men here in Texas. It is going to take an
organized effort by all those who are dedicated and
sincere to end this madness in Texas. I won’t and can’t say which
organizations (or people) are not dedicated and sincere, but if “you are”,
it shouldn’t be long before “you know”!! No one owes me or anybody who is
on death row anything, so I, on behalf of every man facing the death
penalty, thank you for everything that you do in protest. We here in
Texas need focused persistent effective organized measures to be
immediately taken, or murder will continue.

Facts (including basic math) apparently are not your friends. It took 12 years from Derrick’s sentencing date for justice to be carried out. Granted, that is about 10 years too long, IMO. But, of course, you wish to overlook the fact that the appeals process serves as a safeguard for the benefit of the accused. Surely you are not suggesting that the safeguards for — and the rights of — the convicted be removed.
Returning to the basic math: The murders took place about 22 years ago. How did you come up with 18 years anywhere?

Oh, yes . . . to answer your question: Yes, it is justice that Jackson has paid the penalty for his actions — and will now never be able to hurt another unsuspecting person ever again. The fact that it has been 22 years since the victims, Mr. Henderson and Mr. Wrotenbery, were viciously slaughtered does not diminish the value of their lives. Nor does the fact that it took 10 years to apprehend Jackson — and another 12 years to apply the just penalty to their murderer — diminish the value of their lives. Justice is based upon the value of what was stolen. And, again, the value of the victims’ lives does not fade with time.

In the People’s Republic of China there are some 68 criminal offences that are eligible for the death penalty. Many of these offences are non-violent and economic criminal offences.

There was a case where a CEO of a company ordered the dilution of antibiotics to make more money. This economic crime causes the deaths of many people including children and infants. It also created a more antibiotic resistant strain.
Then there was another CEO who ordered some known toxic substance put into baby formula to replace sugar. This also led to the deaths of infants and children.
Then there are the economic crimes which lead to people losing all their savings and resulting in them having to live on the street without food and shelter. You think that doesn’t cause people to die, too?
