Mayor Jane Peters

Mayor Jane Peters

Exceptionally tragic news from Coppell, Texas yesterday, where reports are that Mayor Jayne Peters shot her 19-year old daughter in the head before turning the gun on herself and committing suicide:

COPPELL, Texas — The mayor of an upscale Dallas suburb apparently shot her teenage daughter to death before fatally shooting herself, after leaving notes at their home warning officers about the scene they would find and outlining how to manage family affairs, police said Wednesday.

An envelope taped to the front door of Mayor Jayne Peters’ home contained a key to the house and a typed note advising police they would discover something unpleasant inside, Coppell Deputy Police Chief Steve Thomas said.

Three other notes contained instructions for handling affairs, such as taking care of the family dogs, but did not provide explanations for the deaths of the 55-year-old Peters and her 19-year-old daughter, Corinne.

Corrine Peters

Corrine Peters: Was supposed to attend UT Austin next year...

None of the notes to police indicated why Mayor Peters did what she did. The morning radio guys here in Austin were talking about it, and they were talking about it being severe depression.

Reports have stated that Peters’ husband died two years ago from cancer, so I can see how that might be a possible explanation, to the extent that it’s possible at all to try to explain these things at all…

  1. Why, why, why? WHY?!?

  2. Lots of buzz up here in the Dallas area over this tragic event.
Right now there is only speculation as to why. Friends, neighbors and co-workers have all stated there had been no noticeable change in the Mayor’s behavior and certainly nothing that would have indicated she was carefully planning all this.
There have been some reports that there was some friction between the two recently, but one can only speculate what was behind it, if true.
    So very sad.

  3. Oh God, this is absolutely heartbreaking. One can only wonder whether the shooting of her daughter was an accident and if she then followed up, in despair, with suicide. I cannot imagine how it is possible to point a gun at your own child’s head and then pull the trigger. What a beautiful young lady her daughter was — and she definitely favored her mother.

    • I sincerely doubt it. In accidental shootings that I have read about, the parent was extremely distraught and immediately took their own life. They didn’t write notes for the authorities regarding their estate and leave a key for the police on the front door.

      • Yes, I admit that it does seem likely that she purposefully chose to murder her daughter before committing suicide. What an unconscionably heinous decision. Perhaps she could not bear to think of being completely alone when her daughter left for college. Who knows . . . It is sad that she chose to commit suicide, but no amount of depression in the world could ever excuse her choosing to take her daughter’s life. How sad that Corrine’s life was taken right as her adult life was budding and when she had such a bright future ahead of her. How unfathomably tragic it is that the person who ended her life was the very woman who gave birth to her and nurtured her into a vibrant and promising young lady. The coolness with which Jayne Peters went about tying up loose ends is chilling.

  4. Poor Corrine, this is tragic.

  5. My guess is that she is a democrat because if she were a republican the media sure would have let everyone know already.

    • Yeah, but if she were a Democrat, Fox news would have pointed that out. I haven’t seen her party mentioned anywhere, even on her website. Maybe she didn’t have one. She obviously did not have a soul.

      • ERIC not only are you a BIGOT but you also are a damn LIAR!!! Fox news regulary just replays AP and Reuters news without adding ny commentary into it.The AP and Reuters always mentions it is a Repubican if it is something bad.95% or higher if the AP and Reuters do not report party Affiiation and it is something negative..Almost always about that 95%i was just being gernerous they person in question is a Demoncrap. AGAIN You are a liar and a bigot and of course are a hard core demoncrap because you lie about fox and all demoncraps do. I could give u hundreds of examples where Fox just posted the AP article and not once did they mention any aded commentary into say oh wait the person the AP fails to mentiomn is a bad Demoncrap. That is something your netralized Nazi NEtwork CNN would do or better yet you would watch MSNBC being such an extremist leftist wingbat as yourself. What is funny is you fellow bigot and hypocrite scolds someone else for mentioning party affiliation at a time like this and then she denigrates them and says you must be a teap party person. What a fukkin hypocrite and far worse then the original person just stating their belief. She not only attacks them but then does the same thing herself 2 seconds later. You can guess for certain she is a felow demoncrap like yourself!!

        • you can also mock me and say i have typing errors but it is 202am here so screw you.but again that would be typica spell check nazi behavior coming from demoncraps!! aways superior to anyone ese but oh yeah i forgot you are kind and loving of everyone LMAO!!

        • If it’s 2:02 AM, it sounds like you need to get some sleep…..you might make more sense after that.

        • James makes sense. Since it is already close to noon to 3 pm in the US, your comment makes no sense at all.

        • This country is in trouble, I used to think just the tree huggers were nuts until I read this. Why in the world would you get that upset over news coverage you don’t watch. The news media rabble rouses weak closed minded people for ratings and votes. Her party affillation has nothing to do with this tradegy, God rest her and her daughters soul.

    • How insensitive to drag party affiliation into this tragedy. My guess you belong to the tea party movement.

      • Yet, whenever a conservative is involved it is not only dragged out but published and broadcast through every media outlet. My guess is that you belong to the big fat hypocrite movement.

      • Diane to you understand what a stinking hypocrite you are? You attack others for doing what you did 2 seonds later.Typica demoncrap thug mentality. You should work in the MSM 95% of thenm are demoncrap thugs like yourself or better yet become part of the chicago mafia in Washington DC ALL of them are demoncrap thugs!!

        • James, You ever heard the term “Not the sharpest tool in the shed”

    • What an arrogant, egotistical, asinine thing to write. What ever the reasons behind this tragedy, I’m sure no person can begin to understand them. Certainly, no person should be needy & vindictive enough to believe that he/she is capable of sitting in judgement of Jayne.

To use this horribly devastating loss to point political fingers is too beneath contempt!

SHAME! SHAME ON YOU! THINK WHAT YOU HAVE JUST SAID! NOW PUT YOURSELF IN JAYNE’S SHOES! OR HER FAMILY’S.

      • Who the hell are you going off on? The discussion has been mostly how the MSM reports the news differently depending on political affiliation.

What ever the reasons behind this tragedy, I’m sure no person can begin to understand them.

Bull. It’s not the first time something like this has happened. However, no one in their right mind should believe what she did was right.

Everybody should sit in judgement of Jayne. You can twist it anyway you want but it doesn’t change the fact that what she did was wrong and murder. Shame on you for thinking otherwise. I suggest your children go into hiding.

      • As a collective society, we must unequivocally condemn acts of murder — otherwise we are guilty of tacitly condoning such acts.

I have tried to place myself in Jayne’s shoes. I do feel sympathy and sorrow for those who feel that suicide is their best option, but it is unethical to excuse anyone’s choice to commit murder.

Try placing yourself in poor Corinne’s shoes. She had no choice in the matter. She was brimming with potential and still had her entire adult future before her, just bursting with possibilities.

  6. Very fucking funny, and a DAMN fine time you pick to make a joke. Fuck you.

    • He went *poof*

      • What a wuss.

        • He is worse than that, but his *poofiness* was my doing.

        • Nobody gives a crap if you don’t give your sympathy to the deceased. You don’t even know all the details and your passing judgrment. Your just another close minded holy than thou hang’em high talking head robot.

        • Nobody

What you really mean is YOU don’t.

You don’t even know all the details and your passing judgrment.

Mom shoots and murders daughter, then shoots and kills herself.
Is there something more you know that you aren’t telling us?
The correct term is you’re, not your, you self-righteous butt nugget.

  7. is the party a secret?

    • No. But it’s also irrelevant.

If it turns out that an investigation shows a massive political scandal that was about to be exposed and she killed her self instead, then yes, it becomes relevant. But for now, no, it’s not.

  8. Your correct it is irrelevant but my point is that if she were a republican the media would have made it relevant and spew more anti gun crap.

  9. Oh I wouldn’t be surprised if the local anti gun movement makes an issue of it,REGARDLESS of the mayor’s political ties. In this case political ties be damned. it was still a cold calculated act on the mayor’s part..what a waste.

  10. I beg you not to joke or be irreverent about this terrible (tragic?) incident. I knew Jayne Peters (nee Parsley) very well. We went steady for two years and I know that she was very religious and one of the most Christian people any of us will probably ever know.

I too can only speculate about the reason she did this, but I know Jayne well enough to say that I have faith that in her mind she did this for a good, maybe even religious, reason. And I think her notes (and other experiences I have had with her since we went steady) show that she was still thinking of others. I mean to warn the police that what they are about to see is upsetting? To want to see that the dogs are taken care of? Even at the point of death, she was concerned about others.

I would not be surprised if she thought that what she was doing to her daughter was for her daughter’s ultimate (afterlife?) benefit. But I do not know. I know I pray for her and her daughter, I am confused and perturbed with her, and I wish she had called me (however unlikely that would be) if she was so upset and considering this action.

It reminds me of the walls between us and how hard (impossible?) it is to truly know another person. I do know I am sad and confused, and I ask you to respect that. If you need to laugh or be irreverent, please do it where no one else can read it. Thanks.

    • Excuse me? That she believed it was for a good or religious reason is irrelevant. It was wrong. Pedophiles believe they have the best interest of the child they are raping at heart. We don’t give them a pass. And the fact that she was so organized makes me believe that while suffering from a mental illness, it was not so debilitating that she could not have sought help or not shoot her daughter. Maybe, you should consider that the fact that you are making excuses and/or rationalizing her crime is not very respectful towards her daughter.

This is the internet. If you don’t like what you read, don’t read it.

    • Whoever Jayne Peters was to you at one time and whoever that person was, she is now a double murderer.
Her daughter may have joined her father in Heaven, but not Jayne.
It was reported on one of the local talk shows that one of her notes claimed that they could all be a family again. How pathetic and sad if she truly believed that. Not only murder, but suicide are go straight to Hell express tickets.
What is also really pathetic and sad is she left instructions for what to do with the dogs. If only she loved her daughter as much as she did her dogs.
Now, if you go to the Coppell webpage, there is a photo of Jayne and a memorial note. That should come down and be replaced with Corrine’s image and a memorial.

Oh, I so agree with this.

And, Kevin, who the heck is laughing and being irreverent? I think it is sad anytime someone chooses to commit suicide, but it is unpardonable to take the life of someone else for any reason before one makes one’s freely chosen exit. The sorrow I would have normally felt for Jayne Peters has been replaced by heartbreak and the deepest sympathy for her precious daughter. Corinne had no choice in this tragedy; her most basic right — her life — was stolen from her by her own mother.

        • … but it is unpardonable to take the life of someone else for any reason before one makes one’s freely chosen exit.

Unfortunately, there has been times when that wasn’t true: Give Me Your Children Speech.

        • Yes, but any parent facing this horrifying predicament (sending their children to be murdered at the death camps) who chose murder/suicide did so because life was not an option. These poor parents would have loved nothing more than to see their children spared and able to live out their lives free from persecution.

In light of this, it truly places the problems that any of us face, Jayne Peters included, in true perspective. We too easily lose sight of what is most important. No financial problem or pending public embarrassment is great enough to warrant suicide (suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem). And it most certainly does not excuse the choice to murder another person — and certainly not your own child.

      • it is not up to you who goes to heaven or hell. the Lord knows and sees all and the decision to give or withold mercy is His alone.

    • So why didn’t she kill the dogs too ? Because they have no souls ? If you wish to bring religion into this, what about ‘Thou shalt not kill (murder)’ ? I must say that I have my doubts that you ever dated her.

      • @MARCG- Your tireless attacks are meaningless. Your attempts to “figure it out” will turn up nothing. No one on this earth knows the answer to why behind this.

Kevin is more of a sincere, honest, intelligent dignified man than any of you who chose to “Jerry Springer” this thing beyond belief.

Kevin did date her. She was one of my best friends. They both spent many hours
        in our home.

Now, give it a rest! Show a little class & show some respect. Please.

  11. Single funeral for Coppell mayor, daughter divides many

Even worse, I couldn’t sit through a service where somebody lectured me on forgiveness under these circumstances.

  12. This is horrifying.
My heart goes out to that poor daughter. If you’re that depressed, commit yourself but to take your daughter’s life…just plain horrifying…

  13. Robbie & No2

I think we have another idiot that need to go “poof”

There is no place for Tried of Lies post on this thread.

If he want to spew his liberal kool-aid crap, take it to another thread. It doesn’t belong here!

Proof positive he is an idiot…can’t even spell “tired”

  14. cbs reported that she was in financial trouble, her home had been foreclosure, and she was about to be investigated for misuse of her job-related credit card. Her daughter had never even registered at UA but was to go to another college. At any rate, 2 victims sacrificed on the altar of America’s Baal (consumerism).

    • Not so fast.

CBS reported that she faced foreclosure earlier this year, but the house was never foreclosed on. And even if it was eventually was, she’s in the same boat as many Americans. Unfortunately, her husband died without life insurance and life became financially difficult for her but not impossible. I have no doubt this created a lot of stress for her, but no reason to kill yourself.

Her daughter told one person that she had an orientation at UT but had told several of her friends she was attending TCU. Whatever. If the daughter got into a school she could take out loans and get a job. It’s do-able.

As to allegations of mis-use of credit cards: They have not materialized as of yet. Unless one knows exactly what she is accused of, if accused at all, it is neither here nor there.

sacrificed on the altar of America’s Baal (consumerism).

Only a immature leftard would label a home and a college education as greed. But leftards are hypocrites,e.g., “I drive a Prius!” (to my private hanger, where my private jet is parked.)

[Hope this isn't a double post. I've seem to have lost one.]

      • That post is lost in the interwebs, not in the filter.

It was discussed on local news radio today that the flag at Coppell City Hall is being raised back to full staff, as it has become clear that she was misusing her city credit card.
Also, the funerals were this afternoon and the Coppell webpage doesn’t mention it any longer.
Everybody has troubles in their life, some times they can seem too great a burden to bare, but most of us deal with our troubles without murdering loved one’s.
I didn’t know this woman when she was alive, so will leave it to those who did to deal with this their own way, but since I only know of her for the heinous crimes she committed, she will find no sympathy or kind words from me.

        • It was discussed on local news radio today that the flag at Coppell City Hall is being raised back to full staff, as it has become clear that she was misusing her city credit card.

So, a deceased mayor is deemed undeserving of honor when it is demonstrated that she misused her city credit card; yet, on the other hand, a deceased mayor who murdered her daughter is fit to be honored?

Wasn’t it clear a couple of days back that she had murdered her daughter? I mean this tragedy was officially ruled a murder/suicide. Is misusing a credit card somehow a worse infraction than murder? I’m not quite following this logic.

        • I didn’t follow the logic of honoring her instead of her daughter on their official webpage in the first place.

        • I didn’t follow the logic of honoring her instead of her daughter on their official webpage in the first place.

Yeah, I didn’t quite follow that “logic” either. I am also shocked to see the number of people rushing forward to defend Jayne Peters in the DMN comment section who have no words of sympathy, grief, or understanding for her poor daughter. Reading those comments, you would think that it was Jayne Peters who was the true victim. One thing is for certain: Had this been a man who killed his son/daughter, I do not think people would be quite so “understanding.” There is just no excuse whatsoever to justify this.

        • How did she specifically mis-use the credit card? There is misuse and misuse. Sometimes people do get in a financial bind and use credit cards they should not to pay their bills. That’s not the same as charging penthouse suites and hookers to your government credit card. One time I and some co-workers went to a convention and were accused of misuse of the office credit card because we rented a car for 3 days. What did they think? We were going to fkn walk?

Anyway, her husband had been dead for 2 years, it seems she enjoyed married life, she was attractive and intelligent and she could have met someone new and started a second life.

        • There is just no excuse whatsoever to justify this.

          No ma’am, not any.
Whatever troubles she had, and I don’t doubt they were many, none of them individually or cumulatively can ever justify what she did.

        • Eh. The city atty didn’t know the collective value which tells me it wasn’t shocking and that it was only “several charges.” So, unless they reveal additional details, it’s not the scandal of the century. It appears more that she just didn’t turn in the receipts.

        • Anonymous, don’t know/don’t care, really. It’s just the latest in this sad saga, none of which is justification for what she did.

        • I didn’t say or imply that it was justification.

        • I didn’t say or imply that it was justification.

I know, just stating what is in the news here. Coppell folks are sure taking it seriously, though.

        • Well, here’s a more informative article on this sad saga. It details information about the credit card misuse (which honestly does not seem that bad — definitely not some huge scandal). The suicide notes are available at the end of the article.

  15. Wow. That was a warp-drive poof!

  16. I think all the events surrounding the suicide death are a little suspicious. Maybe I watch too much crime tv but the fact that the gun used in the shooting was for someone else and then the fact that there is this suicide note that calls for cremating the bodies is strange. Wouldn’t someone that passionate enough to leave such a detailed suicide note hand write it instead of typing it out. It seems like a staging to me. As if someone typed the note for her then forced her to sign the end of the note to validate that it was her. Could someone else have had a motive to kill her and her daughter. Like I said I may watch too much tv but I think the police should really investigate other possible causes before they simply stamp this a murdered suicide.

  17. wait it gets better. it turns out it wasn’t even HER gun. she borrowed it from another mayor. haven’t read the full article yet but friend who did said she was among the anti gunner crowd..
    http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/071710dnmetmayorgun.148658cfc.html

  18. It is always possible that things are not what they appear to be and that the whole scene could have been staged. It would be a lot easier for people to stomach if a third party did this. But would a third party leave instructions about the pets? Of course, if the perpetrator was someone who knew Mrs. Peters very well, the pet instructions would be a very authentic touch.

  19. On the third party theme, did she have any enemies? Maybe she really did borrow the gun in order to get a concealed carry permit or for self-protection. Maybe she owed the wrong people money. Maybe she wasn’t going to vote the right way on something. Perhaps all the other deceptions had nothing to do with the deaths. Perhaps someone who knew her well fabricated the scene. Or forced her cooperation.

  20. This case is becoming more and more bizarre.

Jayne Peters spent several thousand dollars on the city credit card renting a car that she had supposedly “given” to her daughter, Corinne, as a graduation gift. In one of the earlier articles, I remember being surprised how much was spent on car rentals over an approximate 2.5 month time frame. I believe the amount was over $2,000. At the time, I assumed the rentals might have been used for city-related travel. But it appears now that this was not the case.

Corinne, Corinne’s friends, and the Peters’ neighbors all believed the car belonged to Corinne — and no one had any idea that it was rented, let alone paid for using city taxpayer money. Between April and June alone, between $4,000 to $6,000 of questionable expenses for groceries, clothing, and car rentals were racked up on Mrs. Peter’s city credit card.

Mrs. Peters also lied to her daughter about being enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. Corinne had believed she would be attending orientation at UT the following day. Neighbors had seen her loading her car in anticipation of the trip. About 20 to 30 minutes later, they then saw Mrs. Peters come out and unload the car after Corinne had loaded it. Within the hour, after Mrs. Peters unloaded the vehicle, the car was returned to the rental agency. Authorities believe that Corinne had been shot up to one full day before Mrs. Peters committed suicide.

Additionally, it now appears that Mrs. Peters had also lied to her daughter about having a tumor. She reportedly told her daughter that she needed to go to Houston for treatment in an effort to keep her daughter at home.

Here is another article on this sad saga.
