Peter Anthony Cantu is scheduled to be executed tomorrow night in Huntsville, TX for the 1993 double rape and murder of two Houston teenagers. Please move the Death Penalty discussion over to that thread.

The last thread, started yesterday, on the worm food formerly known as Derrick Jackson ballooned to nearly 400 comments — mostly back and forth with the insane (and now banned) Euro-hag known as Lirarenn.
As noted in the Jackson post, next on the Texas Execution schedule is Peter Cantu on August 17. Cantu was involved in one the most brutal and gut wrenching murders in Houston history when he and his friend gang-raped, tortured, and strangled to death Elizabeth Pena (16) and Jennifer Ertman (15).
Sean Derrick O’Brien was the first to be executed for that crime, back in 2006. Jose Meddellin, the ring-leader, was put to death in 2008.
If I can arrange it, I’m going to try to be in Huntsville to report live from the execution. I’ve been following and writing about this case for nearly 5 long years, and Cantu will be the last of the men involved who will be put to death, and I want to be there to show my support for the two victim’s family and for the death penalty in general.
I have a huge meeting here in Austin with a big customer on the morning after the execution, so I might not be able to swing it.
Anywho — I’ll have a Cantu-specific thread (UPDATE: here’s the link) up as that date approaches. In the meantime, feel free to use this thread to continue celebrating (yep, that’s right cele-fucking-brating the execution of another vile animal, to discuss the upcoming Cantu execution, or to comment on any other pending executions in Texas or elsewhere.

I am friends with Peter Cantu who is on Death Row in Texas. On almost every board some rabid Pro attempted to attack me for this friendship telling me I were hurting the families of the victims with my support and friendship for Peter. But I’m asking you, isn’t it my business and only my business who I befriend? It’s not like i were telling the victims’ families about this friendship, and neither do I owe these people anything. Do I really have to join this coalition of haters against Peter just because some freaks think it’s the right thing to do? I say no. So if these people really want to support the families of these two girls then they are free to, I don’t have any interest in it.
There were a couple of boards where members acted like it was any of their business. Like I had to offer any kind of justification, I feel good about what I am doing because I know I don’t owe anyone anything and I like Peter. He is really laid back and a decent human being. I don’t have to justify my friendship with him. Not towards some crappie board members or anyone else, not even Jennifer Ertman’s and Elizabeth Pena’s family. These people should stay out of my business because I am not interested in any of their opinons.

Peter doesn’t read hate-mail. If someone starts to get ugly in a letter he stops reading and throws the letter out immediately. Peter doesn’t deal with hateful human trash. [So, Cantu doesn't deal with himself?]
I don’t care pros trying to guilt trip me, and I don’t care for the emotions of victim’s families. They all better care their own business as I care mine and don’t care theirs. It is nice of you to warn me that I might end up on the receiving end of abuse, but they can’t abuse me simply because I don’t care. Peter is my friend and there is nothing they could do against it, and that’s the way it is.
To everyone who still thinks Peter was a monster. He is not. I know him for years now and I can tell you first hand that he is a loving and caring human being. The real monsters make laws in Texas.
I feel nothing but contempt for Mr. Pena and Mr.Ertman in particular who is one of the most evil and disgusting people I have ever heard of. Not even the devil could feel for Ertman, what a nasty piece of work this man is. Just read his statements and then tell me again I should feel anything for this man. Peter is a good person and a dear friend and all Ertmans in this world can’t change my heart felt friendship for him. Peter and I will remain close friends until the day Texas murders him.
I don’t want Peter to discuss the Ertman/Pena case with me, I’m not interested. Look at Ertman again. He says he is looking forward to watching Jose die. Well Jose watched his daughter die and Ertman is looking forward to the same with Jose. So Ertman is no better than Jose was. Ertman is just an evil human being driven by hate and I hope he chokes on his own evil. [But the father of the victim doesn't get to kick your boytoy in the face and knock his teeth out, rape him anally, vaginally, and orally, and jump up and down on his neck.]
I do not care if Peter feels remorse and I do not care for Ertman and Pena or their fathers.
These two girls didn’t suffer 15 years so don’t even dare to compare them to Peter. Their fate pales in comparison to his.
The 15 years Peter survived the girls are not life. He lives in a cage like an animal. So not his life but his suffering is 15 years longer than the girls’.

The compassion for an individual that made a huge mistake in life and gets murdered for that mistake. That is what made me write Peter and what made me keep in touch with his little brother and another person involved. Even if they murder Peter they have not won, they will not manage to murder all of these young men no matter how much Pena and the other basterd wished. They can not even do anything agianst us who support these young man. I hate these bloodthirsty men. They’re no better than these young men.

I was out running an errand when I heard a talk radio show I don’t particularly care for. But they mentioned juvenile, parole, baby, bathtub– and I knew who they were talking about. So I drove home fast hoping I could call them but it was too late. I sent them the info.

A real great and accurate crime movie is Anatomy of a Murder. The judge in the film is a real judge and the writer of the book it was based on.
I was reading the comments on imdb where someone criticized the judge’s acting. Someone else said that he was also the famous Joseph Welch who objected to the McCarthy hearings and said the famous lines “have you no decency, sir…” I thought, oh shit! McCarthy was right, Welch was wrong. Plus he was defending the NLG which has to be one of the biggest lefty antiAmerican atty groups around – then and now.

Reminds me of the shit who got out of prison and was adopted by some church. He started dating a parishioner who had a six yr old daughter. The woman broke it off with the guy. He kidnapped her and her daughter, drove them out to the Everglades, beat the crap out of the woman and left her for dead. Fortunately, she was found alive and survived. The little girl wasn’t so lucky. The pos drove off with the girl and then fed her alive to alligators.
Another reason why I think these churches and their bullshit forgive the pos crap that they shove down peoples throats should be held responsible when innocent people get killed.
I just looked up an article on that horrifying case — I’d never heard of it. I cannot imagine how anyone could be so heartless and cruel to a child, especially when the child is at an age where they are so completely helpless. The little girl was actually only 5 years old. What a terrifying and horrific way for anyone to die, but my heart breaks to imagine such a little one’s terror. I can’t help but fervently and obsessively wish, each and every time I read about such tragic stories, that I (or someone else) could have encountered these innocents in their plight just to have the opportunity to do something — anything — to rescue them.

This woman has had long articles written about her in national newspapers and has appeared in countless television documentaries because she is such a FREAK. And this has been going on for 14 years. I first read about her in 1996.
Add to that the fact that she is local, was married to a well connected defense atty, was a P.I., and her name comes up every time her serial killer husband has a trial, appeal, or court appearance, how can he not of heard of her? And even if he didn’t, I can’t believe there was no one in his office, whether atty, secretary, or investigator who told didn’t tell him.
Either an error in judgment or poor management skills.
A cursory background check, google even, would have revealed she is mentally disturbed, even if he hadn’t heard of her.
My guess is he and his fellow pd cohorts knew, but weren’t prepared for her nuttiness and the shit storm that followed.
I am completely dumbfounded. Her abandonment of a 17-year marriage to marry a death row inmate is mind-boggling, but for her to leave behind her four children who needed their mother . . . there are simply no words to describe such an immoral and selfish decision. Some people just do not deserve their children. They apparently cannot see their own flesh and blood as the incredible blessing that they truly are. This woman apparently loves that murderer more than her own children. Those poor kids . . .

I’d like to know when they are going to set a date for Carty. Her last appeal was denied 6/28. I believe they have to wait 91 or 121 days after the death warrant is signed to set a date. There is no reason that they have so few execution dates set when it is clear inmates are out of appeals.

Twenty years previously, Carty had been recruited as a confidential informant by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Houston. “Houston was being bombarded by Jamaican drug dealers at the time and the DEA needed someone of Caribbean background to work for them that no one would suspect,” she explains. “A friend of mine at the Houston Police Department got me the job. It was interesting work and low-key for me but I had to take on the life of a drug dealer.” At the same time she studied pharmacology at the University of Houston, and later worked part-time as a hairdresser.
Her work for the DEA helped land seizures of thousands of dollars’ worth of narcotics and saw the imprisonment of scores of dealers. Stafford Smith believes that her work may have helped convict someone who Robinson, Anderson and Williams had been working for. “My lawyers believe these three men may have been drug ‘burros’ or mules,” she says. “It was too difficult just to kill me, so they hatched this plot.”
Carty claims her supervisor at the DEA was aware of the link with Robinson, Anderson and Williams, but that this was overlooked by Houston homicide detectives. Her former supervisor is now first on Stafford Smith’s list of people to interview. “That,” says Carty, “is their smoking gun.”
As for the plot to kidnap the baby for herself, Carty believes the theory came from a woman who took her to hospital after a miscarriage, and later told police she believed the desire for children could have been Carty’s motive. “They said I had a miscarriage and that got altered to mean I desperately wanted another baby. That is asinine to me because women can have children at 42 years of age, and I wasn’t planning on having any more kids anyway. I had become pregnant accidentally.”

This was the first bit of information that I ever read on Carty. It is propaganda published by her supporters.
After reading the above, I did some more research and found that Carty’s and the anti’s claims referenced above (that she provided aid to the state as an informant) are grossly exaggerated. First of all, the above makes it seem as though Carty volunteered as an informant. However, it was actually offered as part of a plea deal to lessen her punishment for drug-related charges. (Carty has a criminal history prior to the murder of the poor mother and the kidnapping of the baby.) Again, she did not initiate her services as an informant; rather she seized the chance to receive a lesser punishment on criminal charges against her. Yet Carty did not do a good job holding up her end of the deal and ultimately proved to be fairly useless as an informant.
Here is a better source of information that Anonymous had provided on another thread. She has a long, long history of claiming to be pregnant and there are a great number of witnesses to substantiate that she did indeed claim to be pregnant. She told many people that she would be having a baby boy on the specific day that the kidnappings and murder occurred.
I wish to make a correction to my above post: Carty was offered lesser punishment for auto theft charges (not drug-related charges) by participating as an informant. Her “career” as an informant was short-lived because of subsequent drug-related charges against her. From all the accounts that I have read, Carty was fairly useless as an informant anyway.
The link is to an appendix of 4 prior opinions that Reprieve was required to attach to their petition for cert.
The opinion you should read is the one that starts at page 71a. It is the findings of fact by the USDC magistrate.
Someone on the internet found a link to the appendix on the Reprieve server but it has since been removed. It was not meant to be read by you little people. LOL! However, it was uploaded to google docs before they did.
If you look at any of Reprieve’s legal material, they remove all statements of facts and substitute their own made up ones. They will not post the briefs by the state or the fact section of opinions. THEY DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW THE FACTS OF THESE CASES.
Carty was arrested for GTA and impersonating a federal officer. The feds declined to prosecute because Carty entered a deal with the state over the GTA charges to act as an informant. She was required to obey all laws, make restitution, would be on probation, and arrange for drug deals with the people she knew and hung out with. Carty was always a criminal.
Carty was never denied the right or not informed she had the right to contact her consel. She was arraigned the day after her arrest and was informed on the record and in writing which she signed that she had the right to have her counsel contacted if she was not a citizen. She insisted she was and even wrote it on the form which informed her in writing of that right. A week later, she was back in court and again she was informed orally and in writing and again she denied she was not a citizen. As soon as they found out she was not a citizen, her counsel was contacted. This has to be the biggest pos argument.
And she didn’t study pharmacology at a university. She did not even have an undergraduate degree. At one time, she was employed as a pharm tech. She counted pills. Training was in house.

In summary: Carty posed as a federal agent (FBI) in order to steal a vehicle and then violated her resulting probation and plea deal (her agreement to be an informant) by participating in the illegal selling of drugs. Furthermore, let me just add that when police attempted to apprehend her for this new infraction, she tried to physically injure or kill a police officer with her car in her escape attempt.
It was well known by her friends and acquaintances that she was a habitual liar. For years, she would lie to anyone who would listen about being pregnant. This particular lie was one she would often employ in an attempt to keep her boyfriends on the hook. She was with her latest boyfriend for a few years (I think for 2.5 or 3 years) and she had lied to him several times about being pregnant. He finally became sick of her manipulations and lies and he left her right before the kidnappings and murder. Of course, she repeated her lie about being pregnant to manipulate him into staying with her, but she had cried wolf too many times and he was not falling for it. Carty was desperate to produce a baby to get her boyfriend to return.
And, as you stated, she never studied pharmacology. I also have some reservations about claims she has made about being raped by a stranger in a parking lot (how do you know what to take at face value from a pathological liar?). I also highly doubt her claims that she was the victim of domestic abuse by past boyfriends, as there is no evidence of such. There is, on the other hand, plenty of evidence of how manipulating she is in her relationships.

Oh, yeah . . . I forgot to add that she also lied about how effective she was as an informant. Her work as an informant most certainly did not lead to the imprisonment of “scores of dealers,” as she claimed. It was quite the disappointment to those who made the plea deal with her how ineffective the small amount of information she provided actually was. There were, at most, just two arrests made with information she provided. And I had to laugh to re-read her claim that “a friend” got her the job as an informant. I guess she could claim that one of the authorities declining to charge her for impersonating a federal agent and for stealing a car was this “friend” she mentions . . . And the pharmacology she “studied” was done on the job counting pills at the pharmacy and while participating in the unlawful sale of drugs . . . She can certainly put a ridiculous far-reaching spin on anything.
I believe the “friend” might have been her brother who was a DEA agent. And he probably only got her the job by the fact that she knew enough through him to offer her services to the state police in an attempt to minimize her sentence for the GTA. It was not like she was originally busted for drugs and anyone thought she would be helpful in any way and therefore approached her with an offer.
Yes, Carty most likely actively pursued a deal to avoid punishment for the auto theft/federal agent impersonation charges. Knowing what to ask for would have certainly helped, as it was not likely that such a deal would fall into her lap for unrelated charges (not drug-related, that is).
I couldn’t help but mirthlessly laugh when I read how she and her advocacy group gloss over the circumstances which placed her in the position of informant in the first place. They do not mention the criminal charges she was motivated to avoid.
She also mentions that, as an informant, she was “forced” to assume the life of a drug dealer, but she glosses over the fact that she sought personal financial benefit by participating in drug deals that she attempted to keep hidden from her supervisors at DEA.

Henderson had a last minute writ granted 3 years ago. Hearings were held in Nov. 2008 and Feb. 2009. After that, there are motions and it is submitted for the trial judge to write up a memo of findings of facts. I have no idea why it would take this long. Since, the District Courts (trial courts in Texas) dockets are not online, we have no idea of checking unless we go to the courthouse and ask to see the file. Hmmm… I believe the courthouse is in Austin.
I’m not crazy about the trial judge. He’s retired now and it seems like he has plenty of time to do everything but finish Henderson. Then again, the TCCA should have never granted the writ in the first place.

The doc testifies that they waited until they got her to the OR, flipped her over, and examined her back for injuries. No bruises on back. Yet, people will insist they saw bruises on her back. And, no matter how many times you urge people to read the transcripts they won’t.

Her injuries were pretty minor. The neck wounds were steri-striped. I believe they gave her a couple of stitches on the cuts to her arms. She was only kept in ICU to give her privacy in that the media frenzy had begun.
You should distinguish the photos in the hospital from those after discharge. Some of the photos of her in the hospital are not truly representative, i.e, the red discoloring. The yellow is caused by Betadine used to clean her skin and wounds.

As a European with a strong interest in world events and our relationship with our American cousins a number of things strike me about the Cantu case and other convicts on death row in Texas.
The capital system in Texas is, up to a point fractured, and I believe there are a small number of convicts on DR who are innocent. However, Cantu is certainly not one of them!
Unfortunately, whilst the system is capable of convicting and executing innocent people, all Texans are at risk of falling foul of it, or at least the poor ones are, and that has to be a worry.
Also the appeal process takes far too long. If Texas is going to impliment the death penalty, it needs to commit more fully and bring the appeal process down to under 12 months. Also the court appointed defence lawyers need to be of much higher quality for the system to be more rounded and fair.
By reducing the length of time the appeal process takes would free up the money in the State coffers to provide competent counsel for the accused, and reduce the avenues of complaint for the convicted.
It may also have some deterent effect on the streets knowing that if you are convicted of a capital crime that you will certainly be dead within the year.
Also, the ad seg conditions that the convicted on DR are housed casts Texas in a bad light and also enables the convicted to grow ground swells of support that are so hurtful to victim’s families.
With shortened appeals, you do/not do the crime, you’re convicted or acquited, you’re released or quickly executed and you’re forgotten.
However the system needs to be virtually fool proof for this to work and it is far from that right now.
I’m not advocating Ron White’s “Express Lane” more an over haul of the system that is going to provide better counsel for the accused, quicker closure for the victims families and save the State and citizens of Texas a whole heap of money.
I mean what on earth has been the point of keeping Cantu alive for the last 15 years? More to the point what has it cost?
His involvment in this crime places him way beyond the offenders with a chance of rehabilitation or release. After what he and his gang member friends did there was no going back for any of them. He’ll have his appointment with the gurney but it seems to me that there has been a lot of wastage getting him there.
Anyway, its only my opinion but I do believe the system is flawed and can be dangerous to the truly unlucky.

And with every little jackass on the internet joining in, attacking the trial attys reputation, invading their private life, and spreading this garbage all over the internet, no one in their right mind would take these loser cases unless they were true believers.
Defendants are not entitled to a perfect trial – just a fair one.
And, no, the job of the trial atty is not to get their client off. It is to represent them to the best of their ability within the confines of the law. Having clients convicted and sentenced to death is not how an atty’s competence is judged.

Years ago, you could find more info on this case. Apparently, Pruett started the fight with this guy, kicking, punching, and holding him down, while his father stabbed the guy to death. Pruett was always threatening to kill people, including the entire courtroom.

Uh, no. The USSC only reviews cases before it. They will review claims of ineffective assistance of counsel. However, IAC is not just that an atty made an error. All attys make errors. The defense must all show they were prejudiced by the error.
There is something called “fast track” for federal court review of state capital cases which was originally enacted by Congress in 1996 as part of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act. However, the usual suspects have thrown a wrench in it. California has some of the strictest
requirements for trial and appellate attys and liberally offer training for attys. But, it is never enough because the little anti DP shits control various positions.

It was Germany’s reluctance to execute war criminals in the beginning of the 1950s which led to the DP being abolished in Europe. Europe can go on and on about how superior they are for banning the DP but their motivation and purpose was to protect mass murderers.

Suppose you yourself had to decide whether convicted murderers live or die. You don’t have to be governor for that to happen. You might be called to serve as juror in a capital murder case, or you might vote in an election in which capital punishment has become an issue.
You want to save innocent lives. What do you do?
According to promoters of the National Conference on Wrongful Convictions and the Death Penalty, the safe answer is to spare the killer. At their inaugural session in 1998, they said that of the nearly 4,000 Americans sentenced to death in this generation, 75 have been released from death row after their convictions were reversed. (The figure has since been updated to well over a hundred.) Had those executions been carried out, they argued, that many innocent lives would have been lost.
Those lives “speak to the emotional, human side” of the death penalty debate “as opposed to the intellectual side,” said Professor Lawrence Marshall, organizer of the conference, held at Northwestern University in Chicago.
The horror of being condemned for a crime you didn’t commit is undeniable. But Marshall didn’t say how many of the people sprung from death row were truly exonerated and how many were simply let off on technicalities (as most of them in fact were). Even if a great many of them are truly innocent, other questions remain.
How many innocent lives would have been lost if not for the death penalty? And when executions aren’t carried out, how many lives are put at risk? How many prison inmates have been killed by murderers not sent to death row? How many people on the outside have been killed on the orders of gang leaders imprisoned for murder? And how many innocent Americans have been killed by court-freed killers?
For a look at “the emotional, human side” of that last question, consider Kenneth Allen McDuff. His case shows that to err on the side of mercy can be fatal, too.
McDuff, who in 1964 had raped a woman, cut her throat and left her for dead, first went to prison for several counts of burglary in 1965, when he was 18. Sentenced to a total of 52 years in prison, he was paroled in less than a year.
Eight months later, he and a callow sidekick named Roy Dale Green (to whom he’d bragged of having already committed several rape-murders) kidnapped Edna Sullivan, 16, Robert Brand, 17, and Mark Dunnam, 15, from a sandlot ball field in Fort Worth, Texas. Forcing them into the trunk of their car, he drove it out into nearby Falls County, where he shot the boys in the face several times each, then raped the girl, had his friend rape her, raped her again, and finally threw her down and pressed a stick against her throat until her neck broke.
Green ratted on McDuff the next day, testified at his trial and served five years for his part in the crimes. McDuff, saved from the electric chair in 1972 by the Supreme Court, became eligible for parole in 1976. He should never have been freed. But with Texas under a federal court order to ease prison crowding, McDuff eventually was released. He won his parole, after many refusals, in 1989.
The day McDuff walked, Falls County Sheriff Larry Pamplin told fellow lawmen, “I don’t know if it’ll be next week or next month or next year, but one of these days, dead girls are gonna start turning up, and when that happens, the man you need to look for is Kenneth McDuff.”
Three days later, the first “dead girl” turned up: Sarafia Parker, 29, found in a field in Temple, Texas, the town to which McDuff had been paroled.
He was somewhat kinder to a young woman named Theresa, his daughter by the woman he’d attacked in 1964. She contacted him in prison after being told of him on reaching 21. As Texas Monthly writer Gary Cartwright reported in 1992, “after his parole, he offered to take her to Las Vegas and be her pimp. … Theresa has moved out of state, as far from Kenneth McDuff as possible.”
In 1990, McDuff was arrested for making a terroristic threat to a black teenager, but because the victim was too frightened to press the misdemeanor charge, McDuff’s parole was not revoked. In 1991, McDuff enrolled in Texas State Technical College in Waco. “In the months that followed,” Cartwright wrote, “several Waco-area prostitutes were reported missing, a fact that didn’t appear to alarm Waco police or prompt them to ask hard questions of McDuff” — even after he sped through a police checkpoint with a screaming woman in his truck. “He seemed to be living a charmed life; he beat up and nearly blinded a fellow student at TSTC and threatened several others, and still nobody reported him to the police.”
Finally, McDuff was nailed for two abductions and murders.
On Dec. 29, 1991, Colleen Reed, a 29-year-old accountant, disappeared from an Austin car wash. Her bones weren’t found until 1998; McDuff was convicted of her murder on the testimony of Alva Hank Worley, like Roy Green in 1966 a compliant accomplice. Worley told how Reed cried, “Please, not me,” when McDuff grabbed her, how they took turns raping her on the way out of town, and how McDuff asked to borrow a shovel as he dropped Worley off at his house, saying, “I’m going to use her up.”
On March 1, 1992, McDuff abducted Melissa Ann Northrup, a 22-year-old pregnant mother of two, from the Waco convenience store where she worked. Her body was found two months later in a gravel pit near Dallas. This case got McDuff on “America’s Most Wanted,” which led to his arrest and trial in both the Northrup and Reed deaths.
The Waco paper reported that in closing arguments, McDuff’s defense attorneys “likened the trial to the Salem witch trials and the Red-scare era of Sen. Joseph McCarthy” and “compared the jury to Pontius Pilate, who caved into public demand and sentenced Jesus Christ to death.”
The jurors weren’t buying. They found McDuff guilty and returned him to death row. In 1998, the state of Texas executed Kenneth McDuff for the Reed and Northrup murders, more than 30 years after he first shed innocent blood. His death closed the books on more than a dozen other slayings committed while he was on parole.
McDuff, at his death, was believed to be the only killer to visit death row twice. But the vast majority of murderers never see death row. His example, though worse than most, can be multiplied many times. The number of Americans killed just by paroled killers far exceeds the Chicago conference’s 75 “innocent” ex-cons.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that in 2002, 280 of the more than 3,500 murderers then on death row had prior homicide convictions. In the 1980s, the bureau tracked paroled killers and found that 7 percent of them — more than 220 of each year’s cohort — had been rearrested for homicide within three years of their release from prison. A decade later, a BJS study found a recidivism rate for homicide of only 1.2 percent. About 6,700 killers were paroled in 2002. Even at the lower of the previously recorded rates, more than 75 of them will have taken another life by now — and that’s just a single cohort’s worth of state-enabled mayhem.
Those who seek to confound enforcement of the death penalty don’t concern themselves very much with cases like McDuff’s. Nor do they examine the evidence supporting capital punishment’s deterrent effect, as they would if their true purpose were protecting the innocent. As Thomas Sowell has pointed out (in The Vision of the Anointed: Self-Congratulation as a Basis for Social Policy), the goal such people keep before them is not to save lives or perform any good deed for its own sake. Rather, they seek the undisturbed cultivation of their sense of moral superiority.
It’s long past time our criminal justice system stopped catering to such whims.
Thanks for posting this great article, Dutch. It addresses the main reasons why I support the death penalty. As a child, I read in our local newspaper about McDuff and other released convicts in Texas who abused their freedom by killing more innocent, unsuspecting victims. As a result of such examples, I supported the death penalty at a very young age. In cases where guilt is clear-cut, it is irresponsible to continue to put more people at risk. I also have a very strong sense of justice for the victims, as far as restitution is concerned.

She was granted a new trial as to punishment only. The TCCA ruled that the jury should have heard evidence that she was an abused spouse – allegedly, at her sentencing.

Correction: the court ruled that the jury should have heard evidence of Battered Woman Syndrome. I believe the court was wrong. The trial attys made a tactical decision not to call the expert because he would have revealed statements by Wright that would have hurt her case.
Yes! I just read that in an article…she stated to Dr. Brown that the husband was asleep when she started stabbing him.
But in court, she said he was threatening her with a knife. His family vehemently denies any abuse but her family says otherwise and states she was too afraid to go to the police or a shelter.
It’s hard for me to believe that if there WAS abuse, that his family would be totally unaware of it. The ex girlfriend wants to testify to his abuse as well. Not sure if there are any police reports on that…what a case though. To stab someone that many times…just horrifying. I remember a snapped where a CO shot her husband, had the gun in the couch…but there was so much evidence to his abuse and other CO’s to be there as character witnesses for her that she was found not guilty. I can see where a woman can be abused so much that she is terrified and ends up killing the abuser but this case is so brutal, it’s difficult to imagine a woman committing such a violent crime to “save herself”.
OH, and Laura Hall? Should get life without parole.

I saw a Brazilian documentary called Bus 174 about some street kid who takes passengers on a bus hostage. There is a long stand off, resulting in a passenger getting accidnetally shot by the police, the kid arrested, and dying in custody. It’s slanted to have sympathy for the kid but frankly, I had little if any. And anyway, he was 22 when this happened and no longer a kid.

The efforts of attorneys for Troy Anthony Davis to reopen evidence in his hearing have been denied.
Those lawyers were “attempting … to create an incomplete and deceptive record, perverting the purpose of the rule,” U.S. District Judge William T. Moore Jr. ruled Thursday in a three-page order, rejecting their motion to reconsider his earlier evidentiary rulings.
“By intentionally presenting unreliable hearsay while keeping the (witness) out of court, (Davis) was seeking to prevent the court from receiving all of the evidence,” Moore ruled.
Instead, they should have provided “the court with a record on which the most accurate determination could be made,” he said.
The ruling applies only to the June 23-24 evidentiary hearing material.
Moore has yet to rule on the larger issue of whether new evidence “clearly” establishes Davis’ innocence.

If I were there, I would shove those flowers up Ron Carlson’s ass. He is an opportunist who never misses a chance to lie about the death penalty and to use his sister’s murder for his own disgusting personal gratification.

I am constantly shocked and surprised by sympathy for killers on DR and so little for the victim’s family. In the Cantu case there really could not be a better example for the DP. Cantu has showed absolutely no remorse. He even smirked about it when he was caught. He was 18 (I have an 18 yr old who knows murder is wrong). He did not just murder and rape these poor young girls, he brutally tortured them with his attacks and assaults. He was the gang leader. He ordered them to be killed so no witness would be around. He did this right after a gang beat in at the park. I honestly cannot see where sympathy for Cantu is warranted. I personally will be glad when he is eradicated from the face of this earth. He does not deserve LWOP, he does not deserve the simple things he is provided in prison, nor friends or attention of any kind. It is a shame he will die easily and quietly. He will not suffer like the suffering he inflicted. To say he has spent whatever amount of time in prison and is changed, caring etc. is crap. What choices does he have? Will it benefit him to show his true nature or to act like a ‘good guy’? This is not rocket science. There are people who cannot be fixed, people who use every excuse to justify or excuse their actions. To see someone say they do not care for the victims family and to speak ill of them is disgusting. The Ertman & Pena family are completely founded in their anger and grief and have every right in this world to want Cantu’s death. Can u say you would not want the same if some monster did those things to your young child?
I saw someone mention Cathy Henderson (another POS). She has more appeals stalling her date with death and has Sister Prejean (spelling?) on her side rallying for her. You can find a lot of TRUE information on Henderson on off2dr.com which is a pro dp site that is visited and maintained by family members of the victim of Henderson. Very interesting to see the other side of the fence instead of the ‘save him’ whines from the anti dp folks that you see on PTO.
When I think of those two young girls being treated so brutally and then murdered, it infuriates me.
As a father of daughters, Mr. Ertman’s words, at the crime scene when the police prevented him from seeing his daughter, are those of anguish any father would feel.

Yes, Cantu doesn’t deserve any kind treatment, thoughts or words. What he did to those two girls and their families can never be forgiven or forgotten.
He has two more days to stew in his own disgusting juices.
I only hope the Ertman and Pena families will find some peace when he is gone.
Re Henderson: The trial judge, who I believe might be anti DP, needs to get off his fucking ass and issue is findings of fact. The habeas corpus hearing ended 1 1/2 years ago, fer crissakes.

I completely agree. The poor family will be going to their 3rd execution and I am sure it will be a relief to close that door and try to heal. My thoughts and prayers are with them and I will make sure to raise my glass and toast around 6pm Tuesday. There is another execution Tues. but can’t recall the name at the moment. Guess I will be raising my glass twice that day.
I also wish the families of the murdered girls strength and most of all a feeling of relief and perhaps some closure, although two of the killers are still alive and in prison.
I’ll have to stay up late tomorrow to toast, because it’s 7 hours later in the Netherlands than in Texas.
A well I sleep it off at work …The other two murders who are scheduled for the same day are James VanDivner (got a stay) and Jeffrey Matthews (Oklahoma).
Normally it does not feel right to celebrate someone’s death but in Cantu’s case it is certainly justified.
I look at it as the victory of truth over lies/sanity over insanity. And that’s worth celebrating.
