Hooah! U.S. Army photo by Spc. Adam Turner, 1st Cav. Div. Public Affairs

The 1st Cavalry Division Soldiers trying out for the 2nd Battalion, 38th Cavalry Regiment, Long range Surveillance, Airborne unit here at Fort Hood, Texas gut out the last mile of a two and a half mile buddy run, July 27.

Two and a half miles. While carrying your buddy (and your weapon). In the Texas heat? Ouch.

  1. Good picture. Look at those Joes! A couple of the things I miss about the Army are Reveille at 0630HRS and hearing PT running cadence called off in the distance just as the sun is rising. I always thought “It’s a fine day to be a soldier and be in the US Army”.

  2. This is a great story!! I have a similar one: at a 1/2 marathon I did in March in Boulder City, Nevada, there were a group of 5 soldiers running one right behind the other, with the last one carrying a full-size American flag on this heavy-looking pole. They would trade off taking the last spot and carrying the flag, each doing about 2.5 miles with it. It was about 80 degrees, there were hills, and I found myself blown away. They made it look effortless, and it was not an easy race. God, our military kicks ass in so many ways!
