What is ‘polar bear hunting’?
It’s a racist assault by blacks (mostly young men) on whites (mostly men of any age). Most often it involves more than one attacker on a lone victim, and usually from behind with no warning.
In the Champaign, Ill. area “the number of reports of beatings to white men in Champaign appear to be coming in quicker than police can even process them.”
The most recent attack was this past Friday night on a lone man walking home after a high school football game.
“I’m not a racist. My black friends are just as frustrated and (ticked) off as my white friends,” he said. “The frustration transcends race, but the activities all seem to be race-related.”
And he’s nervous that an attacker or an innocent bystander is going to be killed by a victim who might be armed.
That last line brings up another incident that occurred on the South East side of Chicago. An elderly widow shot and wounded two boys, twelve and thirteen years old, after being terrorized by them repeatedly and throwing a brick through her window. Even in a gun averse city like Chicago and state like Illinois, the woman will not be charged with a crime, but the two punks will be.
There is a web site I find fascinating when it comes to the criminal, thuggish behavior we are seeing more each day. It is called the Thug Report and as their caption reads, it’s “Urban Crime News Straight From ‘da Hood.”
There are many excuses/reasons people can use to try and explain this phenomenon of thuggish behavior, but none will suffice.
If these young people believe they can behave this way with impunity and they aren’t learning better values at home or in their community, then it is up to the greater society to make this right.
It will take more armed citizens like Mrs. Matthews to show these punks and thugs that there are consequences.
One thing is for certain, too many adults are giving their young men poor examples.

And at the state fair in, what was it, Iowa. Large groups of blacks were running around assaulting white people, shouting “it’s Beat Whitey Night!”. That also was not a hate crime, naturally.
It happened at the Wisconsin State Fair as well.

I lived in Champaign/Urbana for several years in the late nineties, it’s a very pretty, very parochial college town that’s divided by thirds: the college, the white townies, and the blacks. You literally cross the railroad tracks separating the black and white worlds.
I was in shock when I first moved to Champaign from Houston (husband’s job), I had never experienced such racial division and open racism in my life.
White townies casually used the term nigger, talked about uppity blacks, and practiced very open discrimination in all walks of life that ranged from hiring, socializing, country club memberships, renting & selling of property, etc.
I’m not referring to poor white crackers, I’m talking about bankers, wealthy businessmen, councilmen, socialites – the real movers and shakers in town. I know, because this was our business and social circle.
The only blacks that were tolerated were the sports stars at the U of I.
Whites were rightfully afraid of venturing into the black neighborhood and avoided that run down neck of the woods at all costs. Many families chose private over the few public schools because of race issues – especially families with daughters.
I’m not surprised to hear of this kind of violence taking place, it was calm when I lived there but the town was a simmering cauldron of openly racial antipathy. The blacks hated and resented the whites for treating them like mangy dogs, the whites despised the blacks for being black.
The Midwest in general was the most overall racially charged part of the country I’ve ever lived (IN, IL, PA, WI, OH), but little Champaign truly took the cake.
Despised the blacks for being black? You just said earlier that “whites were rightfully afraid of venturing into the black neighborhood”, so it sounds like they didn’t despise blacks just for being black.
Despised blacks for being black? Really? I watched my sister get beaten by a group of black girls. Why? because THEY COULD. There was no reason for it. She has a slight disability that makes her “stand out.” Unfortunately, that was not the only attack. I was also harrassed by a black girl that bullied whites. I was able to fight back, so I got picked on less than she. We have have every reason to hate blacks, yet we don’t. I don’t have any friends that feel this way about blacks either. It is a fact that racism grows on both sides of the tracks. This will never end unless we turn our eyes toward Jesus and let him rule instead of some corrupt government.
Daphne, I’ve lived in Chambana since 1981 and all I can say is that you must have had a bunch of racist friends. I’ve never heard the kind of comments you charge the people of this area with. I’m delighted that you moved elsewhere and I trust that you took your racist friends with you.

I would consider myself very tolerant of my neighbors, but I can tell you that quite a few of them hate white people..period.

Sounds to me like a black person trying to invent nonsense to justify the “polar bear hunting.” Champaign and Urbana had no significant racial problems when I was growing up there. There was little or no racially motivated crime. There is now, and it is nearly ALL black-on-white (like 99%). Male and sometimes female thug gangs roaming the streets looking for white/asian/hispanic targets.
As for business people using the “n-word” that’s crap too. The businesses in C-U have been integrated for as long as I can remember with blacks working for banks, retail stores, etc. The government offices too. If anyone talked that way, they’d be fired. This is central Illinois for God’s sake.
It’s a thug problem. With lots of the people moving down recently due to the public housing transfer program in Chicago to downstate cities over the last 10 years. Geez, be honest. Making up crap is not going to make the problem go away.
I lived in Champaign-Urbana for over 10 years and I still have a lot of close friends who live there. No way is it the way you describe.
That was my experience in Champaign.

I doubt this will ever be seen since this thread is so old, but I am curious about this comment. “A great deal of black against white racism” doesn’t really contradict anything Daphne said. She makes some naive comments assuming white racism is encouraging the black racism, but that doesn’t seem to me to indicate she doesn’t think it exists. I read her comment as being shocked by the level of white against black racism being more prevalent in that area than she had experienced in other places. And the black on white racism, that’s just how it is everywhere. I’m not sure where this part of the thread is coming from.
There is also a tremendous amount of black against black violence in Champaign-Urbana for what it’s worth.

Interesting how you leave out the fact that the Champaign school district has been under federal sanction for systemic racism since 1998 until late last year. Resulting in nearly all of the AE and magnet programs being moved to the lower schools located around Bradley Avenue and everybody being bussed to smooth out the disparity.
Or thatBeth Sheppard, the school superintendent, admits they’re dealing with a highly segregated population that wouldn’t interact if they didn’t bus students.
Or that the schools are disproportionally skewed black because of the high rates of white private schooling.

North of University is the racial meridian and, as a current resident, you damn well know the majority of Champaign’s black population are located along a rectangle spliced by Bradley, reaching well into eastern Urbana.
Black on white crime in disproportionate numbers, sure, we see that everywhere. Pervasive, systemic white on back racism in Champaign, absolutely.
If it makes you feel good to deny the core integrity of the town’s ethos, have at it. As an outsider, I don’t feel any compunction to protect the prevailing nature of egregious and pernicious racism that I routinely encountered in white Champaign.

Not all white people learn their racism from parents, or are racists because they are ignorant. I openly admit I’m racist but I learned it from direct experience and observation along with the majority of white urban americans. I’ve never been anything but friendly, inviting, and civil to everyone I meet but 95% of the time I have ever been harassed, hustled, threatened, or beat up, its been by black people. I’ve had black people spit in my face, blow their noses on my shirt, and to top it all off I’m permanently disfigured because I was held down and beaten by black people for no other reason than being vulnerable and white. I just recently had black people throw and successfully strike my car with a large rock on the corner of Mckinley and Bradley for no reason. I feel like I would be MORE naive for not being racist. If once a week while walking down the street a random guy in a cowboy hat spits on you, but the tenth time you flinch, the tenth cowboy hat wearing fellow would probably be all insulted and say “what you think that just because I wear a cowboy hat that I’d spit on you?” Everyday I go out around Champaign there are groups of black people walking in the street yelling at each other and being downright thuggish and ignorant, and this is what “White America” sees all the time, but are still expected to not judge this blatant low class attitude. White people can be ignorant, trashy, and thuggish as well, but black people have turned into a fine “in your face” art form and defend themselves from criticism with claims of racism.
Whites are always criticized and/or viewed as being somehow genetically predisposed to being racists, and somehow being the only race of people capable of racism which in an of itself is a grossly racist viewpoint for society to take. If you read some of these comments closely, you can see claims that it’s somehow white racism that is really behind these attacks and ultimately to blame, which is typical of the society we are in where black people can’t seem to take any responsibility for their position or ignorance and scapegoat white people for all of their ills. Maybe these black thugs are beating up white people because they are violent racist scum, but they will never be charged with a hate crime because, obviously, black people are not genetically capable of racism.

Wow, I stumbled upon this website by accident. I’m glad I found it. I recently left Champaign-Urbana after having lived there for 13 years. I came there for grad school at the University of Illinois and worked and taught at the U of I and also in both Champaign and Urbana school districts. And let me tell you, a small town ghetto can be worse than the real ghettoes in the big cities. Before you jump to any conclusions, I’m a black man. While at the Univeristy I was in this wonderful bubble of fantasy. Granted I did go shopping off campus as well as frequented some of the local “townie” bars. Also I worked a few temp jobs and low wage jobs to help with the bills.
So I saw that there were some low income people and that Champaign wasn’t just U of I in all of it’s gradeur. But it wasn’t until I started teaching for Champaign schools is where I saw the real problems! Many of the black students are offspring of the lovely Cabrini Green “immigrants” we got from Chiacago back in 1995. Champaign has always had black people but it was never this ghetto. Now that it’s more ghetto it’s worse here because it’s a small enough town where it’s easier to claim racism. Many of the blacks in the schools get away with everything but murder. I’m not kidding. Because of the lovely Consent Decree, blacks were given leeway on discipline. Not only that, it dumbed down the schools because many felt the disparity between blacks and whites claiming racism. No the reason why your black students were fail because their “parents” don’t raise them. It’s that simple. Many of them cannot read or write by the time they are in high school because they are so far behind.
What’s even sadder is the young black youth in Champaign try to “out ghetto” each other, by idolizing rappers and the gang bangers in the big cities. It’s quite sad. If you don’t believe me, go hang out at Central High or Franklin Middle School and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Why is it folks think black kids can’t learn or get a good education unless they sit next to white kids?
How does integrating the student population change instruction?
If you take a white school and a black school and swap half the students and teachers, it is not like you have changed anything. You still have the same people and the same amount of money, etc.
What is the point? How are black kids helped by going to school with white kids?
I mean they aren’t suing to get the teachers from the white schools, which would at least have some plausible basis. No, they are suing to sit next to white kids. In all of my reading about education, I have never read that white classmates make you smarter. Does someone have a link to some research that supports the notion that white classmates make kids learn more?
Think about it. It’s just a question of the quality of students in a class. Do the students in your childs class come to school ready to learn and knowing that their parents are going to ask them about what they learned that day? If so, there will be less distractions from learning and the teacher will be able to better cover more material. This is a function in part of the socio-economics of the neighborhood, for which race is used as a poor substitute. In the small town school here there are a few troublemakers whose parents are not concerned with the problems, and everyone is trying to make sure their own children are not affected by the disruption of that class. You can work with the school, there’s not too much that can be done about a disfunctional family.

I grew up in Champaign and Urbana, Illinois where some of these racist beatings of white people have happened. I will give you the truth about the crime situation there. Until the mid-1990′s the two towns (right next to each other) were a low-crime, vibrant University area, the home of the large University of Illinois and smaller Parkland College. There were also many mid-size employers like Kraft Foods and Solo Cup. At that time, there were still a lot of family farms around the area, so there was also a nice agricultural flavor to the area, especially in the pretty small towns nearby. The cities also had a large number of small independent businesses. Crime was relatively low, and limited mostly to certain areas in Champaign. The public schools were good. People thought of the area as a nice place to raise a family. The local politics until the mid 1990s time were moderate with a mix of Republicans and Democrats.
All that has changed. The Urbana City Council became dominated by left-wing Democrats, and of course the state government is now dominated by Democrats. There is widespread political corruption at the state level (largely coming out of Chicago), with the last two governors convicted of serious felonies. Local property and business taxes in Urbana were increased dramatically over the last 15 years to support all sorts of liberal programs, and state taxes on individuals and businesses also increased significantly.
Urbana passed a “human rights ordinance” prohibiting landlords from screening tenants for criminal convictions. At the same time, Urbana transferred a large number of Chicago Public Housing residents to southeast Urbana – which used to be a wonderful family area. Many of the he apartments in that area near the Sunnycrest shopping center are now criminal hangouts. The shopping center has deteriorated and is a high-crime area after dark.
Criminals have moved from the Chicago area to Urbana, seeing the University town as easy pickings. The crime rate has increased dramatically in certain areas at night, with groups of roaming thugs robbing and beating people. There are now home invasions and burglaries. The Urbana police department is not large, and the City Council won’t hire an adequate number of officers. The Council is also very “politically-correct” and highly sensitive to complaints of racial discrimination, so officers are not allowed to agressively confront the crime problem since most of the criminals that have moved down from Chicago are associated with black criminal gangs. This is last statement is not a racist comment. It is a just a fact. If it were were Russian or Chinese gang members doing these crimes in I’d tell you that instead.
According to objective student performance criteria, the once-excellent public schools in both Urbana and Champaign have dramatically decreased in quality and also now have crime problems with police being called to the high schools often.
On the University of Illinois campus, women cannot walk alone at night now without fear of rape, and there are robberies and assaults of students every week reported in the newspaper. A typical “target” for the gang robberies and beatings is a lone foreign student with a laptop computer and other electronic gear. As teenager “townies” my friends and I used to be perfectly safe roaming around campus after dark night, going to movies and playing at the video game arcades. You’d be insane now to let your kids to that.
If you doubt any of what I am saying about crime, search the Champaign Urbana News Gazette website for “crime” + “southeast Urbana,” “University,” etc. [news-gazette dot com].
Because of the crime and taxes, many small businesses have left Urbana, and the downdown area is a sad shell of the thriving area it once was. The only things keeping it alive are the county and federal courthouses, sheriff’s office and the fire/police station. The once wonderful Urbana library often has distrubances by disruptive teenages that require police response. The Lincoln Square Mall is half-vacant. Despite the tax increases, city services are poor and the City Council spends money on all sorts of nonsense programs instead of hiring more police to deal with the crime.
Champaign has remained more business-friendly than Urbana and resisted a lot of the Urbana nonsense that has wrecked that town, but the north side of Champaign now also has a serious crime problem with the criminal migration from Chicago. This is affecting business. The shopping mall area north of town is still active, but retail vacancies are rising. Crime is also increasing in this area and people have to be cautious in the parking lots at night. The truth is that the south side of Champaign is the only area that could be called very safe anymore for a family. Many business are probably going to relocated to the far southwest side of Champaign near the new highway interchange to get away from the crime.
As a result of the crime increase, many people at the University and town businesses now commute into work from the small rural towns around the area. However, even these towns like St. Joseph or even Tuscola have had recent violent crime by criminals coming from Champaign and Urbana or even down the interstate highway from Chicago.
Urbana and Champaign were once wonderful low-crime towns, but the unvarnished truth is that Urbana has been wrecked by misguided politicians, and in ten years I fear thatChampaign may be just as bad. Most of the friends I grew up with have moved out of the area because they cannot stand to see what has happened to our hometowns.

You know…lots of good things going on down here in Austin, Rob. Good jobs, great economy, fantastic music and food, outdoor activities in abundance, and a robust housing market (oh, and that whole no state income tax thing)…
Firstly, I’ll start by saying I was born and raised in Champaign. I lived on the west side, Kenwood area, near Centennial Park. I attended Kenwood elementary school, Jefferson Middle School and Centennial High School. Where I grew up, we were the working middle class. We were white, black, Asian, Jewish, young and old. I never witness any segregation or serious racism in my neighborhood. All the kids on my block knew each other and grew up together. Rob, I completely disagree with your comment, especially about street gangs. Champaign and Urbana has always had street gangs. You can trace Champaign street gangs/clubs back to the late 30′s. In the late 60′s, 70′s, 80′s & 90′s, the gangs in Champaign Urbana were influenced by Chicago biker, greaser gangs for whites and Vice Lords & GD’s for blacks. White gangs in Champaign died out in the late 70′s and most of them became Neo Nazis skinheads. You might find a few remaining greasers hear or there, but not too many.
Racial tensions in Champaign is a long going disease that will eventually die out within a couple of generations, I hope. From experience, the blame is not a political party or race. The problem is the old, outdated system of Chamapaign Urbana. Many blacks in Champaign call it the good ol boy system or the good ol boy network. The system in Champaign is very unjustifiably terrible.
Lastly, the polar bear hunting problem. I remember hearing about this back in the 80′s. It happens every spring or around Black Wednesday. It’s not just black kids participate in this horrible act. White kids join in as well. At the same time, in smaller communities, farm towns around Champaign Urbana area, they have a similar act. It’s called c**n hunting or ni**er beating. A group of young white males would cruise up & down Green street looking for the biggest black male they can find. Same goes for polar bear hunting, looking for the biggest white male they can find. It’s been going on for decades.
Wrong. C-U, as well as Springfield, Decatur, and Danville had no significant black (or other) criminal gang problem in the past until the Chicago “Plan for Transformation” moved thousands of public housing residents to downstate towns. The long post is correct when it says that southeast Urbana and north Champaign has been ruined by these people. Campus is also regularly targeted.
Also wrong about polar bear hunting. As a C-U native I can tell you that there are NO recent cases of whites from the surrounding communities randomly beating up blacks. Are you kidding me? Yeah, the Monticello White Boys picking on unsuspecting large black men! Site me news reports of such in the last twenty years. Nonsense.
In contrast, there have been dozens, and probably hundreds of random beatings and robberies by gangs of blacks of on whites in C-U in the last 10 years since the public housing transfers (and many more in the other cities cited as well as Kankakee and Peoria, not to mention the current huge such crime wave in Chicago). Just search the News-Gazette website. They’ve even attacked and badly injured elderly white people in southeast Urbana, including in home invasions. Armed bank robberies too lately, which used to be unknown in C-U. It’s not Chicago by any means, but it is not the peaceful C-U of the pre-1990s.
Don’t whitewash the problem of black on white racially-motivated crime. It’s very real and documented in video on lots of gansta websites where they post their knockout games and even much worse.
The Democrats have absolutely wrecked Illinois with the Plan for Transformation, their huge state debt, high taxes, and their idiotic gun laws (than hassle law-abiding citizens, not crooks). The Plan for Transformation was stupid to move unemployed low-skilled people out of the Chicago area to the downstate communities mentioned – towns where large manufacturing companies LEFT Illinois years ago due to all the union crap and high taxes. So if you’ve got now money, live in public housing, and you’ve just got a high school diploma (if that), where are you going to work in Decatur, Danville, or even Champaign-Urbana? In C-U you are competing with college students for minimum wage part-time jobs! Because of this, many of these people turn to crime, just as they did in Chicago’s crumbling blue collar job market. These criminals now prey on everyone in the northern half of the state.
And yes, most of the criminals are black. But don’t give me that racist crap. If they had moved thousands of immigrant Russian mobsters or Japanese Yakuza downstate, they’d be doing the crime instead.
Illinois was once a great place to live – 40 years ago. It’s been downhill ever since then as the Chicago Democrats spread their corruption to the rest of the state and looted it. The only thing is has left is fertile farmland. Pity the decent farmers.
Much of Chicago, except the North and Northwest Sides will go the way of Detroit as decent people flee the crime and decay. People have already left many of the downstate towns due to the influx of the criminals and the idiot Democrat City Councils that brought them in.
If you want to see the future of our country under Obama (former Illinois senator) and the Democrats, look at Illinois and California – huge debt, high crime, no blue-collar jobs, immorality, abuse of law-abiding gun owners, and protecting criminals with slaps on the wrist.
Many states are slowly moving in the same direction because strangely after Democrats get robbed, beaten, or taxed to the limit they leave. BUT then they start all over in their new state doing the same nonsense. Examples are Nevada, Montana, and Colorado, which all used to be Republican and conservative. There is a simple reason for the huge increase in crime in Champaign-Urbana over the last 15 years – stupid rental housing laws, passed by liberal Democrats, that have resulted in attracting huge numbers of Chicago criminals to the city. In the late 1990s The Urbana city council passed so-called “anti-discrimination” measures as part of their “human rights” ordinance. These laws prohibit landlords from screening or declining tenants based on a long list of “discriminatory practices” – far beyond the federal anti-discrimination standards. These include prohibitions on declining a tenant because of “number of children,” “personal appearance,” “political affiliation or activity,” “student status,” “class” (whatever the heck that means), “source of income,” and “ARREST OR CONVICTION RECORD.”
So, just to start, in Urbana if you are a landlord you’d be required to rent to an 18-year old student (presumably high school as well as college), who works at a part-time minimum wage job, shows up with greasy hair and an unkempt beard, in filthy stinking clothes, and spouts off about how he is in the Communist Worker’s Party, and feels that landlords are abusers of the people since private ownership of rental property should be illegal.
Next you are required to rent to a single woman with four noisy, constantly-disruptive children who’s only “source of income” is welfare and a Section 8 housing voucher. As soon as she moves in, her “baby daddy” with a criminal record moves in too, and threatens you if you ask him to leave. Soon the neighbors are complaining about noise all the time, garbage thrown on the lawn, and the children stealing and vandalizing.
And now the worst: you are REQUIRED to rent to convicted rapists, robbers, murderers, muggers, arsonists, and other assorted thugs who have served their (short) Illinois prison term, or are out on probation. You are also REQUIRED to rent to the thugs who are out on bond, pending trial for a violent felony. The language is simple you cannot decline someone for “an arrest or conviction record.” If you don’t the city will fine you and sue you.
The Champaign rental ordinances are nearly the same, except that the “source of income” and “arrest and conviction” language are slightly different. For example, the violent felon only has to have been out of prison for five years and you must rent to him.

The other jurisdictions in the whole United States that have such idiotic prohibitions against declining violent felons are Madison and Appleton, Wisconsin and Dane County in Wisconsin (the county where Madison is).
With the transfer of large numbers of public housing residents out of Chicago by the Chicago Housing Authority over the last 15 years, many of these people, now using Section 8 vouchers, have moved to Central Illinois cities. A large percentage are permanently unemployed by choice and rely on public assistance or “hustling.” While those on Section 8 are supposed to be screened for criminal records, as I wrote, a violent criminal baby daddy often moves in later. But in C-U there’s no need. He can get his own place! You have to rent to him!
So the moron leftist Democrat politicians in C-U brought this on the city, thinking that the solution to criminality and poverty is to integrate criminals and those who refuse to work with law-abiding, working, peaceful citizens.
Now nearly every weekend night there are crowds of thugs with low hanging pants hanging around campustown attacking students. Their girlfriends watch or participate, while hooting and yelling.
And areas with public housing or a large concentrations of Section 8 residents in C-U, such as the once-very nice southeast Urbana, have been wrecked by the crime. In southeast Urbana, residential property values have dropped significantly. 80% of the small businesses have left Urbana over the past 15 years, while property taxes have gone way up to try to make up for lost sales and business tax. Retired people in these areas are trapped – victimized by the thugs but unable to sell their houses for a decent price. Of course some of these people are former left-wing liberal faculty who brought this on themselves by voting in the leftist Democrats on the City Council.
Champaign-Urbana used to be a nice area with moderate politics. Now you see the reality of what happens when you vote in leftist Democrats. They wreck a town with their foolish vision of a socialist utopia.
