This weekend is the annual Army-Navy football game. Not such a big deal to most college football fans, but the biggest game of the year for guys who went to either The United States Military Academy at Westpoint or the United States Naval Academy.
Unfortunately for the good guys in the bad-ass camo uniforms, the squids have won every game since the turn of the century with the exception of the Army win in 2001.
We have a lot of US Army and US Navy / Marine Corps veterans working at our company, to include two officers who graduated from Westpoint and two who graduated from the USNA (our company President, an Army veteran, graduated from The Citadel).
One of the Marine officers who graduated from the USNA sent out the following good natured email to all the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps veterans in our office this morning:
I am so sorry that you gentlemen have to face the reality of another Army-Navy Game – especially since you’re forced to root for the losing team.
The bright news is that since a little before the turn of the century (1999), your alma mater has managed to beat Navy – once – in 2001.
You should take pride in that fact – that there is always is a glimmer of hope that – somehow USMA will rise to the occasion , no matter how deep down you have to dig.
Unfortunately, I know you’ll have to wait until 2011 before you’ll win your second inter-service rivalry this century. From all the folks in the Naval Service, we thank our Army brethren.
Thank you for showing up to the Game. That speaks a lot by itself. Your team is consistent. Also, your uniforms look great (I think better than ours) and you guys do play a meaningful part in helping us win another victory.
All my best tomorrow
The ensuing email thread this morning has been a riot of good-natured inter-service rivalry. If you’ve ever worked around a bunch of men/women from the various branches, you know how much we like to make fun of the other services. Like this:
GO Army!

I’ve always enjoyed the Army-Navy game. The spirited rivalry is as old as the nation.
I do, however, need to remind all of you grunts and squids of a very important fact from the 2010 football season.
USAFA won the CINC Trophy.
They did so by defeating Army 42-22 and Navy by 14-6, winning 17 of the CINC trophies, the most by any academy.
GO ZOOMIES!
They did so while wearing these really cool looking uniforms. Check out the words on their backs and the really cool helmets.
Congratulation to all three service academies for qualifying for a bowl game, the first time in history all three have gone bowling in the same year.
Hey No2….
Those are really cool uniforms worn by the Falcons.
The helmets look like The Thunderbirds.
They sure were.
It was a special occasion uniform.
It was worn against Navy and Army.
You are right, it was meant too look like the USAF Thunderbird’s paint scheme.
Robbie posted the Army’s camo uniform picture, but I am still waiting to see their gray/silver uni with black helmet for this year.
Great story about the Medal of Honor recipient that will be tossing the coin at the start of the Army-Navy game.
He earned the MoH by crash landing his plane on purpose in mountainous terrain…in an enemy infested battle zone…in sub-zero temps…to try and save his friend and wing man.
I sure hope all the young men on both sidelines fully realize they will be in the presence of greatness.
Duty-Honor-Service are only words until some one like Tom Hudner shows us what the words look like in deed.
Makes me proud to be an American, knowing that such men come from this great nation.
Daddy was career Army, husband retired from the Army reserves. Hubby’s family are all Navy. The emails started last week, the text messages are fast and furious now. All in good fun! Go Army, beat Navy!
GO ARMY-NAVY: BEAT AL-QAEDA!
