Congratulations to my fellow Texans!
The first of Gov. Perry’s two emergency legislative items, and unfinished business from the previous legislative session, has passed.
The full story comes from KXAN:
AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Republican-backed Voter ID bill passed in the Texas Senate 19-11 Wednesday night. After nearly 40 amendments offered and six hours of debate, the move to require Texans to present a photo ID before voting was one step closer to becoming a law.
While senators rejected a string of amendments to allow additional forms of photo ID, they approved giving Texans the ability to use concealed-handgun licenses to vote. The amendment passed 30-0, adding handgun licenses to the list of acceptable items: driver’s license, passport, and military ID.
This certainly creates problems for rabble rousing organizations, like ACORN, but irrespective of the type of NUTS that oppose the integrity of the ballot this will help eliminate those voting illegally, especially the living dead. At some point the rules for absentee voting will need to be addressed.
I’m sure the Dems and their various radical groups will try to find legal challenges, but they are almost certain to fail, as this bill was modeled after the state of Indiana which has already been upheld by the SCOTUS.
Gov. Perry released this statement concerning the Senate passage:
I applaud the Texas Senate for passing the voter ID legislation, which represents a significant step toward preserving the integrity of the ballot box in Texas. I am pleased that state lawmakers are quickly addressing this issue, which is important to Texans and critical to ensuring our state has proper protections against voter fraud, and I fully expect the House will soon follow suit and pass this important measure.
With a GOP super-majority in the House I believe passage in that chamber is a foregone conclusion. The Dems can take a road trip to Juarez, if they choose, they can’t stall the business of the citizens of the great state of Texas.
Of course the opponents of this legislation are trying to minimize the significance of the Senate passing this bill, falling back on the canard of the $27 billion dollar budget deficit. That they think we believe them on this topic is an example of how little they think of us Texans in the first place. While the budget deficit is a serious issue, it is by no means as severe as they claim, as the deficit is based on the highest dollar amount of the wish list of each state agency, not what their actual budget requests will be. Asking for a larger budget than will actually be given is as old a budgetary ploy as any.
GOD BLESS TEXAS!
This is a law that Texans have been asking for.
To the opponents of this bill and all their empty claims about what this bill does or does not do, I refer them to an old Texas colloquialism:
Time to paint your butt white and run with the antelope.

UPDATE (Robbie): My friend and Houston-area blogger Greg at Rhymes with Right has a post up this morning reporting that an unhinged liberal Houston-area blogger, John Coby, was so distraught over the passage of this bill, that he threatened physical violence against his state representative:
For example, if State Representative Debbie “Skeletor” Riddle walked in with her ID in hand, I would walk her skinny white ass right out the door and billy club her for impersonating a human being.
Didn’t Jared Loughner make similar threats to Rep. Giffords prior to actually carrying them out? I’m just say’n…
Though, if he’d posted this exact quote about President Soetoro, the Secret Service would have already been at his front door.
The cowardly little man (I wonder if he beats his wife/boyfriend with that billy club?) doesn’t allow comments on his “blog,” so don’t bother going over there…

Thanks for posting this, N2L. It was going to be the first thing I got to this morning.
In addition to the forms of identification you mentioned, voters can also present a Texas state ID card (which will be free to those who claim to be too poor to afford even that) and passports.
To all those who claim that this prevents the “downtrodden” and “destitute” (two terms I heard on the radio this morning) from being able to vote — I gotta ask you…how the hell were they voting before (if they even were)? How did they prove who they were in order to vote previously? How did they apply for their various government assistance programs (and don’t kid yourself — if they’re that downtrodden, they’re drawing all sorts of government handouts…welfare checks, unemployment, food stamps, subsidized housing, etc.).
If you don’t have a valid and legal ID and you’re a resident of Texas who is over the age of 18, then you are simply too lazy or too stupid to go get one. Maybe both. Either way, you’re exactly the type of person we should all be thankful isn’t voting.
I thought you might, but kept looking at the draft list and didn’t see anything in the pipe line, so thought I would put it up while I had the opportunity.
The hollow excuses for allowing people to vote without a photo ID will only gain traction with those who are uninformed or wish to game the system. All any decent citizen asks is that their vote be counted fairly and honestly. Allowing any wiggle room for fraud and an unfair election should not be tolerated.
It is beyond audience comprehension that any adult that is a legal citizen can function in today’s world without at least one photo ID and for most they have several.
With the trends in Texas, this battle for illegal votes by the left is quickly becoming a futile effort. With redistricting coming, the left should come to the realization that their maladaptive ideas and tactics will no longer work here. But they won’t learn from it and they will never stop on their own, they have to continue to face political defeats such as this legislation and we can never relent in defeating them.
Texas is looking better all the time!
