According to Bloomberg, Americans would be pissed off at the Republicans for shutting down the Federal Government due to their “irresponsible cuts.”
Americans are sending a message to congressional Republicans: Don’t shut down the federal government or slash spending on popular programs.
Almost 8 in 10 people say Republicans and Democrats should reach a compromise on a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit to keep the government running, a Bloomberg National Poll shows. At the same time, lopsided margins oppose cuts to Medicare, education, environmental protection, medical research and community-renewal programs.
When I first read Bloomberg’s headline — Government Shutdown Opposed by Americans in Poll Faulting Republican Cuts,— I thought, “Shit…they should be blaming Democrat spending not the Republican cuts to their out-of-control, spend-it-like-it’s-not-your-money spending.”
Regardless of the spin you’re getting out of D.C. or the Left-o-sphere, there simply is no way to reduce the deficit without going after entitlements. Especially Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. But…
Fewer than half of respondents say cutting Medicare benefits or raising the age at which Americans receive Social Security retirement benefits would have a large impact on the deficit, and only 2 in 10 favor cutting Medicare benefits.
Well…those people are idiots and likely vote for Donks anyway.
However, when it comes to cutting state deficits, people seem to be a lot more aware of what the real problems are. According to a recent Gallup Poll:
Of seven possible ways to balance their own state’s budget, Americans are most likely to favor cutting back on state programs (65%) and reducing the number of state workers (62%). Floating more bonds (30%) and raising state income or sales taxes (33%) garner the least support, followed by raising business taxes (39%).
That’s right…the closer the problem gets to home, the more people are saying “cut, cut, cut.”
