Eric Holder: My people aren't smart enough to pass your tough police test. So make it easier, would ya?

Eric Holder urged the Dayton Police Department to lower their testing standards for new recruits so that more of “his people” could get in despite having failing scores on the tests.

Instead of finding a way to help blacks better prepare for these types of exams and to help them rise up to the standard, Holder falls back on the greatest tragedy of affirmative action: lowering the bar and expectations of those it’s meant to help.

DAYTON — It’s a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.

Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.

Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.

The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.

“It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community,” said Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane. “It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation.”

“The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed,” agreed Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward.

The D.O.J. and Civil Service Board declined Dayton’s News Source’s repeat requests for interviews. The lower standards mean 258 more people passed the test. The city won’t say how many were minorities.

“If you lower the score for any group of people, you’re not getting the best qualified people for the job,” Foward said.

“We need to work with the youth and make them interested in becoming law enforcement officers and firefighters,” said Beane. “Break down the barriers whether they are real or perceived, so we can move forward in this community.”

The D.O.J. has forced other police departments across the country to lower testing standards, citing once again that not enough black candidates were passing.

The Dayton Firefighter recruit exam is coming up this summer. The chief said it’s likely the passing score for that test will be lowered as well.

William Jacobson:

As pointed out by commenter/blogger A. Worthing, it is hard to see how this holds up in light of the New Haven fire fighters case.  But this administration does not seem swayed by precedent.

  1. Weep for the future. *headshake*

  2. Sounds like an admission from the blacks to all the other races.

  3. So if the standards are lowered so his people can pass will they still not pick the cream of the crop meaning the ones with the high scores … oh wait that’s racist!!

  4. This is a disgusting…

  5. And a slap in the face to worthy law enforcement officers…

  6. who went and got a degree to be an officer like my brother in law and father in law…

  7. Eric Holder himself is an example of what happens when the expectations for competency and proficiency are lowered. How else would HE get the job?

  8. Blacks have the same opportunities as whites to an education. You are degrading your own kind by lowering the test scores! You, Mr. Holder, are an idiot!!

  9. How dumb do you have to be to fail a civil service exam? Remember, police offiers have to write reports that will be admitted in court. Imagine one of Eric Holder’s relatives be a victem of a crime. What if that crime be throng out becuz the ofizer cant reed or right?

  10. Well kiddies, Holder’s DOJ refusal to prosecute the Black Panthers should have been an indicator of things to come. Riddle me this: What law allows the DOJ and Holder to throw out edicts like this? What’s next, lowering the test scores for medical school, pilot school.

Those who can’t pass this test, didn’t have very successful high school careers either. They may very likely not even be able to read the damned test, much less pass it. If that is the case, they need to apply for a job for which they CAN pass a test.

  11. you stupid people, passing the police exam does not in no way makes you qualifried for the police job.integrity makes you qualifried. for examble, rodney king, shane bell, oscar grant and the list go’s the police murdered this people and they i think, pass the test.
