Max Hastings at the Daily Mail is referring to London’s amoral welfare class when he writes the following headline:
Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent, brutalised youngsters
But it applies equally to America’s entitlement-devouring welfare class.
If you live a normal life of absolute futility, which we can assume most of this week’s rioters do, excitement of any kind is welcome. The people who wrecked swathes of property, burned vehicles and terrorised communities have no moral compass to make them susceptible to guilt or shame.
Most have no jobs to go to or exams they might pass. They know no family role models, for most live in homes in which the father is unemployed, or from which he has decamped.
Again, I have to remember that he’s talking about London, and not the welfare denizens of Baltimore, Atlanta, Detroit, or Philadelphia, where a majority of their citizens’ lives are subsidized (or fully funded) by the Government.
They are illiterate and innumerate, beyond maybe some dexterity with computer games and BlackBerries.
They are essentially wild beasts. I use that phrase advisedly, because it seems appropriate to young people bereft of the discipline that might make them employable; of the conscience that distinguishes between right and wrong.
They respond only to instinctive animal impulses — to eat and drink, have sex, seize or destroy the accessible property of others.
[snip]
The depressing truth is that at the bottom of our society is a layer of young people with no skills, education, values or aspirations. They do not have what most of us would call ‘lives’: they simply exist.
Bottom line: eliminating any incentive to take care of yourself, to accept personal responsibility, and to become a productive (and producing) member of society is a losing proposition for everybody. And when you allow the same groups/families/communities to live this way generation-after-generation, the moral decay is inevitable.
Anyone who doesn’t see that what is happening in London right now could happen in one of our major cities (my bet on the first city to go all-London on us is Philadelphia) isn’t paying attention.

Coming to America soon
Many of the “youths” rioting in the streets of England are black. Not much mention of that.
Yesterday, an article appeared in the left wing Guardian:
“For me, the deepest issue at plat here is one of responsibility. Who is responsible for law and order in our nation? Who is responsible for the behavior of our young people? Can we blame the state when parents have been allowed to abdicate responsibility for the behavior of their children?
The biggest problem our country has faced over the last two decades is that everyone thinks the government should do everything. Personal responsibility and community responsibility have been replaced by state responsibility. If the riots have shown us anything, it is that this approach doesn’t work.
In a way, we are all responsible for the riots, whether directly or indirectly. We watched the previous government talk up right for young people but with no mention os responsibilities. We have allowed our welfare system to prop up immoral lifestyles. We have not taught all our young people that an entitlement culture is morally wrong. And we have paid the price for this liberalism.”
So says Shaun Bailey, journalist for The Guardian. Of course, if Mr. Bailey’s words were to be published in the U.S., he would be attacked as just another conservative racist who didn’t care about black people considering that a large percentage of the rioting “youths” are black. But you see, Shaun Bailey is a African Brit (is there such a thing there like African American here?) and he understands the damage done by an over generous welfare system that placed no responsibility on those who lived their entire lives off the largess of the taxpayers of Great Britain.
I just finished Thomas Sowell’s The Housing Boom and Bust. Mr. Sowell explains the mindset of those who are given special privileges due to their race, noting that within a few short years of the government building fancy new apartment complexes for public housing, they are turned into ghettos. Understanding that the “public housing” system is an abstract failure and a costly endeavor, the government has turned to “Section 8″ housing, placing the same people who destroyed fancy new public housing apartment complexes in houses located in nice neighborhoods, thinking that if you improve a person’s housing, you will improve the person. What then happens is you have a one-house ghetto located in a nice area where housing values are decreased by the placement of the entitlement bunch.
Gang membership is on the rise, and yes, you can blame part of that on the illegals who come here, not to make an honest living, but to commit crime unfettered. But a lot of the blame goes to the liberal policies of our government who believe the philosophy that you can leave your teenager unattended, with the keys to the car and the liquor cabinet, and it will be OK.
When those who live in public housing have not so much as the responsibility to keep their apartment clean, when you hand people Lone Star cards where they can buy furniture on it (large screen TVs are considered “furniture”), when there is no requirement to police their own neighborhood and chase out the drug dealers and gangbangers, what you are going to get in the end is London.
Sorry this is off topic.
