The torturous murder of James Byrd, Jr. in Jasper, Texas drew national attention. Three men, Shawn Allen Berry, John William King, and Lawrence Russell Brewer tortured Byrd before they chained him by his ankles to their pickup truck, dragging him for three miles until he died. It was a brutal, racist (Brewer and King were well-known white supremacists) attack on an innocent man:
On June 7, 1998, Byrd, age 49, accepted a ride from Shawn Berry (age 24), Lawrence Brewer (age 31), and John King (age 23). Berry, who was driving, was acquainted with Byrd from around town. Instead of taking Byrd home, the three men took Byrd to a remote county road out of town, beat him with anything they could find, urinated on his unconscious body, chained him by his ankles to their pickup truck dragging him for three miles. Brewer later claimed that Byrd’s throat had been slashed by Berry before he was dragged. However, forensic evidence suggests that Byrd had been attempting to keep his head up while being dragged, and an autopsy suggested that Byrd was alive during much of the dragging. Byrd died after his right arm and head were severed after his body hit a culvert. His body had caught the culvert on the side of the road, resulting in Byrd’s decapitation.
Berry, Brewer, and King dumped their victim’s mutilated remains in front of an African-American cemetery on Huff Creek Road; the three men then went to a barbecue.
Today, more than 13 years after that day, the first of Byrd’s murderers will be put to death for their role in that crime. Sometime just shortly after 6:00 pm HTT Lawrence Brewer will be put down like the rabid, evil dog that he is.
The Killers
John King was also sentenced to death for his role, including being responsible for beating Byrd with a baseball bat before the dragging. He does not yet have a execution date (but hopefully it won’t be too much longer).
The third thug, Berry, testified against King and Brewer, and was spared the death penalty (he shouldn’t have been), and was instead sentenced to life in prison. He is eligible for parole on June 7, 2038, when he will be 64 years old.
You would think that these evil racist animals would be too much for even the sickos at Prison Talk. You’d be wrong. For some bizarre reason, the most vigrously worshipped thugs at Prison Talk tend to be white supremasicts. One of these mentally-sick women, Christie Marcontell, married Shawn Berry (by proxy) after he was convicted and sentenced for this crime. What a sad, pathetic life she must have.
KFDM posted a two part video interview that they conducted with Brewer back in August of this year, if you can stomach to watch (Part 1 and Part 2). A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said to their knowledge it was his first (and now only) interview since arriving on death row. But this pretty much sums it up:
“Going through all those trials and still absolutely zero remorse,” said Rowles (former Jasper County sheriff Billy Rowles). “That’s just so far over my head I can’t comprehend it.”

This is not getting as much attention today because of the big publicity for Troy Davis and probably also because this crime was terrible and brutal beyond imagination. But if we believe that the death penalty is wrong, then it is wrong in this case just as much.

For the first time I actually read some of the stuff on that site. Like I said I’m not just saying this, those people need serious help, I pity that there life is so horrible and twisted they spend time loving and sulking over people like this allll day everyyyyy day. Like I said I’m on the fence as far as DP goes but I am very passionate about telling those morons they are just as sick and twisted as the guys in prison.
I remember the Byrd case very well. Hopefully his “spouse” (and I use the term loosely) will remove his rotting carcass and pay for its burial so we don’t have to pick up the tab.
I’ll give “Nenia” this much — at least s/he’s consistently opposed to the DP. Not in agreement, of course, but I’ll respect someone who is consistent in his/her views over the majority of PrisonTalk groupies who think everyone on death row is innocent.

For those of you who decide to brand this guy as a monster… Just remember, Byrd was a big time dope dealer, also a piece of Garbage to society. It got labeled as a “Hate” crime. Think about this. If the role was flipped the black guy would have only got 3rd degree murder and 30 years to life in prison with chance of parole. But this guy has to pay the ultimate penalty of death. Society today disgusts me.

Not only did they murder a citizen of Texas, they did much more. They terrorized a community, embarrassed our state, caused grief to the victims family and traumatized the law enforcement officials that investigated this crime.
Having been a police officer I can tell you, the memories of crime/accident scenes aren’t like photos that you can put out of sight and only look at them when you wish. Those mental images are open files that will flash without any notice.
I never witnessed a decapitated victim, a few who nearly were, but not like Mr. Byrd. I can’t begin to imagine what the personnel saw when the investigation began and they found Mr. Byrd’s severed head. Then to actually interview the cretins involved in this crime and hear all the details, those are indelible memories that the LE personnel can never remove and to them I say God Bless. They had to endure the gruesomeness of the crime and gather the facts so these men can receive a just trial and the sentence they not only earned, but justly received.

Its a very different feeling you get for sure when you see something like that. There really isnt much I havent seen, there is always the few you get called to that you just will never get out of your head or thoughts.

What finally convinced me to go back to college and quit the LE business was the senseless carnage on the highways.
The last of three consecutive fatality vehicle accidents I had to investigate involved one fatality, a 3 month old infant, crushed by its mother’s weight against the dash board.
I was done after that.

I watched the news bulletins that Robbie posted links to, although he did warn that they were hard to stomach! However I felt uplifted by the sheer grace, humility and dignity of the former Sheriff of Jasper County. He was obviously very disturbed and traumatized by the events regarding James Byrd’s murder but had performed his duties impeccably to ensure justice was served in a fair and righteous manner. I feel the medical and LE professions are a vocational calling and sadly trauma seems to go with the territory.
I have always been far too self serving to contemplate it and I’m a lesser man for that, however I can see you have been effected by your experiences much like that Sheriff, but like him you have the comfort of knowing that with your hand on your heart, you have truly served. For that at least you have my lasting admiration and respect, and I suspect your community’s also.
I’m thousands of miles away, and I know it’s not much, but I’d like to thank you.

My intention was to try and give a different perspective for others who may not realize what an effect brutal crimes such as Brewer’s has on the people responsible for building the case.
Believe me, you don’t even want to know some of the shit I’ve seen or medicjj, or nearly any other officer out there protecting our communities. Not everyone can do it and still others can do it much better than others. It could be divine intervention, how we are socialized or a myriad of factors that create that rich tapestry known as our psychological matrix, but whatever it is, the Brotherhood of Sheepdogs is found universally.

When Senator John Whitmire heard about what this turd had to eat, he reached out to the head of the department of criminal justice and demanded the last meal end! Brewer wanted to die. He felt that life in a cell 22 hrs a day was a worse punishment. He ordered that last meal just to be “in charge” one last time. Now he’s ruined it for everybody else (a la carte meals). I think we did him a favor and he was thumming his nose at us until the end. I was an opponent of the DP until Bin-Laden. He had to GO! He was still producing little Bin-Laden’s. Still haven’t changed my mind about the DP within the US judicial system, though.
