Case Keenum

Most people have never heard of him. The young man from Abilene plays quarterback for the University of Houston Cougars, a school that doesn’t play in one of the major conferences and is seldom seen on national television.

What this humble young man, the son of a football coach, has accomplished will probably stand in the record books for many years.

Here are some of the records he has smashed this year:

**October 22, 2011–Football Bowl Subdivision’s All-Time leader in total offense
**October 27, 2011–All-Time leader in total touchdowns by an FBS quarterback
**November 5, 2011–Became NCAA All-Time passing yards leader
**Holds record for 300 yard passing games

Many may try and discount his record setting career at UH, claiming it is a “system” offense and they play inferior opponents. I have watched this young man play since his state championship performance at Wylie High School. His ability to throw with accuracy in any conditions is simply amazing.

Case’s abilities and performance, even against some top ranked opponents, have not gone unnoticed by those who present awards based on those attributes, not just what school they play for.
Here are some of the awards he has received and he is a finalist for many more this season:

* 2007 Conference USA Freshman of the Year
* 2008 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year
* 2009 Finalist, Davey O’ Brien Award
* 2009 Finalist, Walter Camp Award
* 2009 Conference USA Most Valuable Player
* 2009 Sammy Baugh Trophy

Award Watch List:
* Manning Award Watch List
* Walter Camp Award Watch List
* Davey O’Brien Award Watch List
* Maxwell Award Watch List

Story continues after the break.

In the game on October 27, 2011 when he set the All-Time TD record, he entered the game against Rice trailing the former record holder, Graham Harrell of Texas Tech, by four TDs. He tied the record by halftime, then threw five more touchdowns in the second half for a total of nine TD passes…IN THE RAIN! There are many QBs in major college football that couldn’t accomplish this feat if the other team was laying down.

Now that he has set these new records, he will be breaking his own records in each of the remaining three games on their schedule, as well as a bowl game.

UH is still undefeated and the only team from Texas ranked in the top fifteen in the country.
As Case Keenum said in a post game interview:

“I’m not going to take any of these things lightly,” Keenum said. “I know for a fact that it’s a very special honor, but I’m not going to fully enjoy it and celebrate it until after the season.
“And hopefully I’ll have a lot more to celebrate than just the records.”

Congratulations Case!
And thank you for providing football fans like me so much fun and entertainment, as well as pulling for a nice young man to succeed.

  1. Yes! Amazing!

    • He’s a good’un.
      BTW, in the video the cute dark haired girl is his new bride, his sweetheart from Abilene. They got married this summer.
      The future looks bright for this young couple.

  2. I’m not quite a UH alumni — I earned my undergraduate degree from UH-Downtown. But, since we didn’t have a football program at the Downtown campus, I’ve always felt like UH was my team.

    Very happy to see Case achieving so much…seems like a genuinely nice young man.

    • The campus was close enough, I hope you were able to take in some of their games.
      I have yet to hear a bad word against him and he seems to be a very level headed and well grounded young man. The type of young man you like to see succeed in sports, a nice young man and not a punk.
