Feb 14, 1927: 7 people killed in Chicago, a worldwide news event made into countless movies. Now, Chicago refers to this as “Thursday,”

Wait…doesn’t Chicago have just about the strictest gun regulations in the country? (that’s a rhetorical question; they do) Regulations whose entire purpose (purportedly) is to keep guns out of the hands of bad people who would use them to do harm to their fellow Chicagoans? Then how does this keep happening day-in and day-out in Chicago, the city of not-so-brotherly love?
Indeed. Actually, I’d call it a ‘slow day’ for Chicago’s gangsters.
More from the Huffington Post:
Fifteen people were shot Tuesday evening in Chicago over a six-hour period on the eve of the mid-week Fourth of July holiday.
A 10-year-old girl who had been playing near an open fire hydrant was shot around 11:20 p.m. in the 200 block of North Leamington Avenue in the city’s Austin neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Hey…here’s a free parenting tip for you: Do you want to know how to keep your 10-year old daughter from being in crossfire of a drive by shooting at 11:20 p.m.? Don’t let your frigg’n kids play in the streets at 11:20 at night. Yeah…it really is that simple. A 10-year child should be home, tucked safely into bed much, much earlier than 11:20 p.m..
And yeah…I’m placing some of the blame squarely on the shoulders of this kid’s parents. Or, more likely parent, as I’m sure at least one (if not both) of them have long ago abandoned not only their parental responsibilities, but their actual children, as well.
And in case you think I’m wrong about this little girl’s mom:
Kyesha Kohnke stood outside Stroger Hospital, her face hard with anger, as she described how her 10-year-old daughter cried in pain while a doctor and nurses tended to two gunshot wounds in the little girl’s body.
“I thought she was dead,” said Kohnke, 24. “It’s sad. I’m happy that she’s still here. But it’s really sad.”
Kitanna Peterson and Kohnke’s boyfriend were hit by gunfire as they cooled off near a fire hydrant around 11:20 p.m.
24-year old mother of a 10-year old girl. You do the math. And you’ll notice in the third paragraph that momma has a boyfriend, rather than a husband. The story doesn’t mention how many other children Ms. Kohnke has, but I’ll bet you my next paycheck against yours that my tax dollars are being used to raise those children. And, in about 4 more years, my tax money will also start going to raise this now-only-10-year old child’s children.
So, where was momma when her little baby was shot? Getting her hair did. So she left her child with her totally responsible boyfriend. Who just so happens to be a gangbanging thug and the target of a rival gang’s drive-by shooting. The little girl was just ‘collateral damage.’
Police provided no details of the shooting, but said they were investigating whether the boyfriend’s gang connections had something to do with it. He has a lengthy criminal record, police said.
Here’s another parenting tip, free of charge: Are you a single mom, trying to protect your children and keep them safe? Then don’t date gangbangers with lengthy criminal records. But if you simply must, don’t leave them alone with your children; don’t let them play in the streets with them in the middle of the night either. You’re welcome.
Now, someone please tell me that CPS has been called and this child will soon be put in a safe (non-relative) home.
The Tuesday violence comes on the heels of a weekend during which at nine people were killed and 17 hurt by gun violence in the city.
As The Daily Beast noted in a Monday column, Chicago’s murder rate is in the midst of a surge not seen since 2003.
Why would any sane, law-abiding, and productive person choose to live in Chicago? A city where the old adage ‘if you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns’ is proven irrefutably true on a daily basis.
