Tomorrow, we’ll go to the polls to select the next Senator from the state of Texas. Yes…I know that there is a rumor of a Democrat opponent in the November elections, but the last time a Democrat won a statewide election in Texas was 1994. I’ll bet you a year’s salary that trend does not get reversed this year.
So, we’ll either get an exceptionally conservative Tea Party & grassroots favorite, Ted Cruz — or we’ll get the bend-over-backwards to work with Democrats, thinks he can lie and buy his way to a Senate seat, establishment politician David Dewhurst.
In case you can’t tell from the description, I’ve thrown my hat in with the conservative fighter, Ted Cruz.
Dewhurst was the leading vote winner during the primary election on May 29, winning 45 percent to 34 percent for Cruz. However, since then, Cruz has surged.
According to a poll released today from the independent (though they are a Democratic polling firm that works for Daily Kos) Public Policy Polling, Cruz has opened up a huge 10 point lead over Dewhurst:
PPP’s final poll of the Republican Senate runoff in Texas finds Ted Cruz opening up a 52-42 lead, an increase from our survey two weeks ago that found him ahead 49-44.
Cruz’s victory is driven by 4 things: the Tea Party, the enthusiasm of his supporters, a generational divide within the Texas Republican ranks, and the lack of regard the party base currently holds for Rick Perry.
There’ s one other factor — that Dewhurst is running a dirty, ugly, lie-filled attack campaign that is turning undecideds into Cruz voters. During the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics and in the first two days of competition, Dewhurst has flooded NBC with ugly attack ads. Only one other candidate has enough money on hand and also has so little class as to run campaign attack ads during the non-political world event: Barack Obama.
My twitter timeline lit up with sharp criticism for Dewhurst every time one of his ads ran during the Olympics. These tweets are representative of what I was seeing on Twitter:

Dewhurst commercials are ruining the Olympics. #txsen

Of course, Dewhurst’s own “internal polling” claims that the Lt. Governor is up 48 percent to 43 percent. I would suggest that Team Dewhurst polls some folks who aren’t on his paid campaign and ninja Twitter squad.
This comment over at Legal Insurrection from Trooper John is spot on:
Presuming Cruz wins, I suspect Dewhurst will have such a moment with his people. But David Dewhurst will know: it was Joe Straus; it was the proposed state income tax; it was the proposed state property tax; it was defeating the TSA anti-groping law; it was the weird deference towards Democrats; it was the arrogance and filth of the campaigns.
Oh, and Intrade has Cruz’s chances at 90%.
Tomorrow is likely to be a very long, sad day for Team Dewhurst. If you you have not already early voted, I implore you to find your polling place tomorrow and get out and vote for Ted Cruz.
