Obama: The Most Anti-Second Amendment President in US History
A few weeks ago, I posted on Facebook that Obama was the most anti-second amendment President in the history of this country. One of my Facebook friends — an exceptionally smart guy with whom I went to high school and college (Baylor) — challenged my assertion and asked for links and cites.
I’m not usually one to do other people’s homework for them, but he decided to call me out and goad me a few weeks later for not being able to back up my claim.
Hey Noel [a fellow high school classmate], did Robbie Cooper ever respond to your request for data supporting his claim that Pres Obama is most gun-control-favoring president ever? I’ve researched and I can’t find anything that supports that. I’m wondering where he got it…maybe from Fox News false/innaccurate news? Hope all is well!
And Noel’s response:
No, he didn’t. And if there were anything to say I would certainly expect him to browbeat me with it, ha ha. Fox News et al. is exactly why we should reinstate the Fairness Doctrine – and support public media!
This, from a guy who claims to be a staunch Libertarian, yet has one of the most shameless man-crushes on Obama — the biggest enemy of the limited government beliefs of actual Libertarians. I assume he’s Libertarian in the same way that Andrew Sullivan, Meaghan McCain, and David Brooks are Conservative …
Instead of posting my proof on the Facebook page of the other high school classmate where this goading took place, I decided to make a blog post out of the topic instead.
Obama’s Anti-Second Amendment Views/Statements
Again, my claim is that Obama is the most anti-second amendment President ever. And here’s why I say that (note, that not a single one of my sources or cites will be to Fox News):
- Richard Pearson, Illinois State Rifle Association Executive Director, on then-Senator Obama — “While a state senator, Obama voted for a bill that would ban nearly every hunting rifle, shotgun and target rifle owned by Illinois citizens. That same bill would authorize the state police to raid homes of gun owners to forcibly confiscate banned guns. Obama supported a bill that would shut down law-abiding firearm manufacturers including Springfield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer. Obama also voted for a bill that would prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one gun per month. While a state senator, Obama voted 4 times against legislation that would allow a homeowner to use a firearm in defense of home and family (Illinois Senate, S.B. 2165, vote 20, 3/25/04).”
- Obama (During an Illinois Senate debate with Alan Keyes) — “I think it’s a scandal that this president [Bush] did not authorize a renewal of the assault weapons ban.”
- Obama — As a US Senator, Obama voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting (United States Senate, S. 397, vote 217, 7/29/05).
- Obama spent eight years (1994-2002) as a director of the Joyce Foundation, a billion dollar tax-exempt organization. The Joyce Foundation spent millions creating and supporting anti-gun organizations. “During Obama’s tenure, the Joyce Foundation board planned and implemented a program targeting the Supreme Court. The work began five years into Obama’s directorship, when the Foundation had experience in turning its millions into anti-gun “grassroots” organizations, but none at converting cash into legal scholarship.”The plan’s objective was bold: the judicial obliteration of the Second Amendment.
- Obama’s two Supreme Court nominees, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan are widely considered to be anti-second amendment. Sotomayor voted with the minority in the famous Heller decision. “Heller was a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held that the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution protects an individual’s right to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes in federal enclaves, such as self-defense within the home.”
- And here’s Obama’s own views on the D.C. gun ban: “Obama personally voiced support for the D.C. ban at other times. In February, Leon Harris, a news anchor for the ABC affiliate in Washington, said to Obama: “One other issue that’s of great importance here in the district as well is gun control … but you support the D.C. handgun ban.” Obama’s simple response: “Right.” When Harris added “and you’ve said that it’s constitutional,” Obama again said “right,” and he is clearly seen on tape nodding his head in agreement.”
- Opposes civilian concealed carry:
- I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry. — Mendell, David, “From Promise to Power” (2007), p. 251.
- I am not in favor of concealed weapons. I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations. — Pittsburg Tribune-Review (April 2, 2008).
- [Obama] backed federal legislation that would ban citizens from carrying weapons, except for law enforcement. He cited Texas as an example of a place where a law allowing people to carry weapons has “malfunctioned” because hundreds of people granted licenses had prior convictions. — — http://www.icadp.org/page236.html (Citing David Mendel, Chicago Tribune, February 20, 2004)
And, perhaps most damning: Obama: We’re working on gun control “under the radar“:
On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial “large magazines.” Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, “to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,” she said.
“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Brady recalled the president telling them. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”
The Huffington Post describes how the Obama administration is exploring ways to bypass Congress and enact gun control through executive action:
The Department of Justice reportedly is holding meetings discussing the White House’s options for enacting regulations on its own or through adjoining agencies and departments. “Administration officials said talk of executive orders or agency action are among a host of options that President Barack Obama and his advisers are considering. “
Many believe that Eric Holder and Obama’s botched Operation Fast & Furious was part of their “under the radar” plan to manufacture a gun crisis (US arms being trafficked to Mexican drug cartels) in order to crack down on legal gun sales and ownership in the United States.
So…there’s my reason for stating that Obama is the most anti-second amendment President in history. I have more if you like…but I thought this should be adequate. I know a lot of my readers have followed Obama’s anti-gun stance, too — what have I missed?
I’ll post a link to this on the Facebook page where I was challenged.

Don’t know your friend Noel, but the one who is nameless and taunting you is clearly your old friend who has visited here. He can claim to be anything he wants, but from what I observed he puts the “LIB” in libertarian. His MO is typical in his mocking comment, if the information doesn’t coincide with his lib view he claims the sources are bad.
He didn’t do any research or if he did only at the Øbama website or typical lib blogs and LSM news sites, but most certainly not from an opposition view of B. Hussein. I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine and typed “the anti-gun obama administration.” The list of articles seemed endless, as they don’t do things the same way that Google does.
Despite that, it wouldn’t matter what facts you presented, he is a lib and facts don’t matter.
What I do with the few remaining friends I have that are still inclined toward being a lib and I wish to remain friends, we have a pact not to ever discuss political issues. I value their friendship and they mine due to the history we have from shared experiences and years gone by.
Until your friend has a Robin Of Berkeley type epiphany, nothing you can say or do will ever make a difference.
This is what people said about Clinton too. The rhetoric gets tired after awhile. Obama is the most ____ ever… until the next Democrat gets elected, right? 2016, or 2020 will roll around and suddenly you’ll start beating the drums about the new guy who will undoubtedly be THE MOST RADICAL MARXIST EVER.
The phrase “Most anti-second amendment president” implies that he’s actually done something anti-second amendment while president. All you cite are off-the-cuff statements and votes from his senate days. A more accurate label would be “Most anti-second amendment senator who became president.” But then again, there are more anti-gun senators who’ve held office.
By the way, with these overblown hysterics, you morons are driving up the price of guns and ammunition for ALL of us hunters and gun enthusiasts, not just your fellow militamen. So… uh, thanks for that. I guess.
Wow!!! aren’t you the bright one!!! I love how you have to call names (moron) first!!
“rhetoric gets tired after awhile. Obama is the most ____ ever… until the next Democrat gets elected, right?”
And I am certain you are one of the ones that was calling Bush Hitler and supporting code pink. I also am certain you are one that is tagging Romney as a wall street insider who only cares about the rich! Talk about tired rhetiric!
BTW….O has done something anti second ammnd as pres, F and F. Of course you will come back and say we are being hyterical. Maybe….but how about asking dear leader to release the documents instead of exercising executive priveledge. Talk about a joke. What is he hiding? Most transparent admin in history, ehh? Whatever, keep drinking the punch son.
One last thing mr hunter…. the price of guns and ammo always go up when a dim is in the white house. Why is that? It is because dims are in favor of disarming a legal citizen and leaving only the criminals with the guns. Look at chicago you “Moron”! Thanks for playing!
Hail to the Gold and White
Is there a point in that bizarre, rambling abortion of a rebuttal? Does Montgomery College not emphasize basic instruction in grammar, spelling or forming basic arguments?
As far as I can tell, you’re not responding to anything with a substantive argument. My favorite part is your inability to properly spell the word “rhetoric” even though it’s used in the argument to which you’re responding.
In that context, Max’s “moron” seems pretty apropos.
Yes, it is me, Robbie’s libertarian friend. It was actually Noel who asked him for data to back up his claims. But when he refused, I did chime in. I researched and found nothing damning. Plus, I had just seen some lidicrous lie-filled advertisement on Fox News about how the UN and Hillary are trying to take our guns. I hoped Robbie was not drinking that koolaid, and it turns out he wasn’t.
And yes, as a libertarian, freedom and liberty drive my value system. Mr. No2, thank for pointing out that I put the “free” in “freedom”. I used to think you didn’t care for us freedom-lovers, but maybe you’ve come around.
I left the GOP back in 1994 after proudly voting for Bush 41 for my first two national elections and campaigning for Reagan before that in the Conroe Young Republicans. The rise and continuance of anti -freedom and big-government policies in the GOP was why I left; couldn’t take the hypocrisy. But also because, unlike the anti-freedom stance of the social conservatives, I embrace a full-freedom platform… speaking of…check ours out:
“favoring minimally regulated markets, strong civil liberties, drug liberalization, civil rights (such as in marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws), separation of church and state, minimally regulated migration across US state borders, non-interventionism and diplomacy in foreign policy, i.e., avoiding foreign military or economic entanglements with other nations with respect for freedom of trade and travel to all foreign countries, and a more responsive and direct democracy.” (http://www.lp.org/platform)
Robbie, if you really think that is not actually what I believe, then after 30 years you still do not know me, or you do not understand what being libertarian really means. You should check into it.
As for backing up your opinion, thank you for your efforts. I promise I did my due diligence in research and only found the same light, non-proof that you did. And as an avid reader of the very pro-2nd Cato Institute, I was surprised that I had not read anything similar to your assertion. What you proved was what I already knew, that president Obama is a Democrat who favors gun-control…big deal, that’s one of their things. He votes with his party and makes comments that appeal to his liberal base. Paul Ryan voted “yes” throughout the federal feeding frenzy of Bush 43′s reign, but I still believe Ryan is a true fiscal conservative. Obama also makes comments that appeal to the middle like, “if we act responsibly, we can both protect the constitutional right to bear arms and keep our communities and our children safe.” Politicians say things.
Yes, Obama is a politician, but not the most anti-second amendment president. Otherwise, he would have used his political capital to try to pass gun control laws instead of health care reform. Gun control falls way down in his administration’s list of priorities. I consider the assault weapons ban the most anti-second amendment action, so Clinton has him beat.
Your man-crush comment made me laugh. That stems from my optimism and my ability to separate people from their policy views. I look for the good in everyone and try to find common ground. I absolutely disagree with Obama’s domestic policies. They are nothing like what I would do if I was president. But I think he is doing what he believes is right. So what if I disagree? Opinions are just that, opinions… not facts. As right as I think I am, ultimately I know that my views are just educated guesses based on experience, analysis and education. There is no way they are right…no one’s views are. Or everyone’s, however you want to look at it.
I need to get on here more often. I always mean to, but my work site block’s access to UrganGrounds. It looks like it’s going strong. Keep fighting the good fight, my friend. — Wes “the free in freedom” Ven Johnson
MAYBE HE MEANT TO IDENTIFY HIMSELF AS A LIBRARIAN INSTEAD OF LIBERTARIAN….JUST SAYIN’.
Typical that all the comments disputing the post don’t attempt to address the bullet points of the post supporting the assertion about Obama.
In my uneducated opinion the entire lead up to, and implementation of Fast and Furious says it all anyway.
And when did someone’s ability to use spell check correctly make someone’s argument illegitimate?
Soon your retarded candidate is beaten so prepare your next 4 years loser speech
Even in Congress you are losing power so soon your nightmare kick your fatasses
Well since the elementary shooting that killed 26 people, I’d say the ar-15 and ak47 are going to be outlawed soon.
I would say not.
The discussion should be about banning violent video games, violent movies and violent song lyrics.
