UPDATE  - Damn. The photo is not from today:

But, rest assured, The Old Guard is out there today, and will be no matter how ugly it gets.

As Frankenstorm is preparing to smash the east Coast today, almost everybody is either evacuating or seeking the safest shelter possible.

Almost everybody definitely does not include members of the US Army’s 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). This was the scene at the Tomb of the Unknowns in D.C. this morning:

The Old Guard during Hurricane Sandy

These are real men. This is real commitment. This is real love of country and of the brothers with whom you serve and for those who served before you.

Since April 6, 1948 the The Old Guard has guarded the Tomb 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

And that means today, too. God bless these fine young men. Keep them safe and strong today, that they not waver from their duty.

  1. I had the chance to visit Arlington National Cemetery once, and witnessed the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns. There is simply no way to describe it.

  2. Fear not. They will not waver, whimper, whine, nor will they ever stand down.

  3. The Old Guard has its own Facebook page and it has current photos:

And the quote of the day (from the Facebook page for those who cannot access it at work):

“The Sentinels at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier maintain their vigil even as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Eastern Seaboard. The Old Guard has guarded the tomb every minute of every day since April 6, 1948. Today will be no exception.”
