Gun Show and BBQ — Spending an All-American Day with my Family
Got up early this morning to head out to the Saxet Gun Show at the Travis County Expo Center. With all of the gun-grabbing legislation and anti-gun rhetoric and mis-information from the complicit Democrat Media Complex, I knew the show would probably be a little busier than usual.
Throw in the Travis City Council’s ill-advised threats to shut down gun shows on county-owned property, I wanted to make sure we got there right at 9:00 a.m. when the doors opened.
My plan was to head out there by myself, but when my wife said she wanted to go, too (which of course meant bringing our boy), how could I say no? When you’re wife tells you she wants to go to the gun show with you, 1) you thank you’re blessings for being married to such an awesome woman, and then 2) tell her to get her butt in gear and let’s get going.
At about 9:05 a.m. we turned left from MLK onto Decker Ln, and immediately hit a line of cars trying to get into the Expo Center:
A mile away. The line coming from the other direction was nearly as long.
All trying to get into the same gate:

We waited in this line of cars for about 45 minutes and were still more than half a mile from the gate when I finally said to hell with it. With a 9-month old baby and my wife in tow, I figured the crowds and the wait simply wouldn’t be worth it.
I’ve been to the Saxet Gun Show a number of times over the last several years. And I’ve never seen anything like this. The gun-grabbing leftists have no idea what they’ve done; no idea of the size of the beast that they have awakened.
There has to be at least 3000 people in line to get into #saxet #gunshow twitter.com/alexcoulter06/…

So, we headed south to Lockhart, the BBQ Mecca of Texas (and thus the world). And, one of the coolest old town square courthouses in all of Texas.

Smitty’s Market in Lockhart is my all-time favorite BBQ joint, but today we tried one of my other favorites, Blacks, who has the best brisket and beef ribs in all of Texas.

And when the sign says “Giant Beef Ribs!” they mean Flinstonian-sized beef ribs. Cash was…shall we say…a little in awe.
So, while we didn’t make it into the gun show today, I did get to spend the morning with my wife and boy, and we got to chow down on some of the best BBQ in the state (Cash had some of mommy’s mashed potatoes and gravy and some of daddy’s black eyed peas).

Nothing like a good family outing! BTW – are beef ribs better than pork? Never had ‘em..
I generally prefer pork ribs — and pork ribs are also much more common in Central Texas bbq joints, In fact, lots of places that don’t even offer beef ribs. But when they’re done right, I really love me some beef ribs. Best beef ribs in Texas, for my money, are Black’s in Lockhart and J. Mueller’s BBQ trailer in Austin (at least before they fired their pit-master, John Mueller).
Would that have been Cash’s first gun show?
And I would have thought that more gates and doors would be opened. (But I’ve never been there so maybe there aren’t that many entrances.)
But I agree–the gun-grabbers may have awakened the sleeping giant.
I know Cash doesn’t have any choppers yet, so I hope you at least let him taste what is in store for him by licking your fingers.
Nothing like beef “brisket on a stick” ribs when they are done right.
As for the gun show, I’m not a bit surprised with the turn out, I’ve been seeing reports like yours from all across the country. I haven’t been to a gun show in a while, don’t really need or want anything, so I have been waiting for things to calm down some before I go again. My favorite here in Dallas is the Market Hall show, I always take my kitchen knives and drop them off at the booth that sharpens knives while I peruse the wonderful displays of new and old firearms. There is always something I need like gun cleaning supplies, un-PC tee shirts and it never hurts to pick up a few more mags.
David Mamet: Hands Off My Gun
Great piece from a former brain dead liberal.
I read that also. Really well written and thought out. Which means that Leftists everywhere are getting ready to chew him apart and completely ostracize him.
Oh my goodness, that photo of Cash with the rib is ADORABLE!
And that’s coming from a non-meat eater too! Yes, I reside in Berkeley, California and I don’t eat meat but in addition to cute babies I also adore the Second Amendment and I am so happy to see photos of sane Americans waiting in line to exercise their GOD GIVEN rights. It gives me some hope for our future. It’s so easy to lose hope when you are surrounded by lunatics and liberals. (Same thing really, right?)
Thanks for making me smile!
P.S. I may not eat meat but if you drop in I will be happy to grill you a steak. Happy hunting!
OT, but a fun email, in the event y’all haven’t seen it.
Don’t forget N2L – there are still plenty of Republicans in Chicago and that means support for the party and NRA. Just sayin’
Any good joke has the element of truth, which this one has. I posted about a story on here last year that claimed there was less murder and violence than in Afghanistan.
And it’s not the honest citizens in Chicago that are the problem.
Chicago if you would examine the crime stats, has 4 high crime neighborhoods against how many? I would not represent my city as replete with crime and rapes everywhere. It is not accurate N2L. The leadership is the problem but some of us are working on it. And our cops are doing their fair share too.
I don’t particularly believe that demonizing Chicago or for that matter any city without solid facts serves any purpose in the cause to promote NRA and Republican agenda.
The author of that email has but one functional brain cell.
I thought it was funny as it could be. It’s a good joke.
No its not N2L. I have as thick of a skin as the next guy but I can tell you that Texas is not going to make any headway all by itself. Just sayin’, you hear me??????
On a very serious note. I am going to be a resident of Chicago 30 years this July. I am alive and well, became a Republican and NRA supporter at age 18 and represent one of the most noble professions out there. There are thousands like me in Chicago who somehow don’t dodge bulletes at all.
I along with many others in Chicago advance the party line and NRA agenda. It is a very difficult environment since we are surrounded by dem libtards on a daily basis.
Every city has its problems N2L. But people survive and roll up their sleeves to help the failing Republican Party. Change is local my friend and because I love Chicaqo I will stay here and do whatever I can to make it a city worth of being in this republic of ours.
I don’t give two shits about the Republican party, they are half the problem.
I have always been unregistered and vote for conservatives.
:Are there any other parties in our beloved America that are conservative? Dems, Libertarians or the Greens? We can excude DEms from being conservative, that is a given. Libertarians are economically conservative but socially liberal. And lastly, the Green Party is all about social justice, grassroots democracy, nonviolence, and environmentalism. Well N2L, seems to me you do have to give two or more shits about the Republican Party. :lol
No I don’t.
The “party” gets no support from me, not money or kind words. There is no GOP or DNC anymore, not really, there is only one party, the RepubliCrats.
Who knew that a Rino was an invertebrate….
So what is it that you want N2L? Did you ever wonder why we lost the election? Did you ever wonder how come the dem libtards are laughing at the conservative ideals and the reasons some of the things that all of us here do are not working out? Have you ever wondered why young people are turning away from our ideals, our movement and our vision for America? Have you thought about the fact the Republican Party is the backbone behind the NRA?
There is no movement without people N2L and sometimes it takes sacrifices. Criticism is moot when we have the enormous task ahead of us to win back the Oval Office. Whether you like it or not, those that you call RepubliCrats are the best chance this country has to get back on track.
We cannot afford to alienate anyone whether a man, a woman, a female soldier or anyone that can potentially mean a vote for a Republic and the conservatism you so aspire to. The socio-historical context in which we live dictates just that. Have you heard of the Tea Party N2L. They had a good run and where are they now? Extremes don’t work anymore because America is people, and people either make or break any particular movement. As I said, reality is staring us in the face….
I am going to support the Republican Party because as I wrote above, the democratic/libertarian or Green America is the worst alternative.
Let’s hope you are right! Leaders don’t cry but are they being smart about winning THE AMERICAN PEOPLE to their side. That is the dilemma I look at. The Tea Party has a lot of rethinking ahead…
Thanks, Robbie, for posting the picture of that line of traffic waiting to get into the gun show….
Reading about it across the country is one thing, but a photo makes a nice impact….plus that twittered pic of the line outside from Alex.
I think the Republican party needs to be fixed from within, getting rid of the RINOS and old establishment GOP….. A tall order, yes, but I tend to agree mostly with Thomas Rykala on this.
Also nice to hear from a conservative living in Chicago.
I started wondering if any were left there !

Great picture of Cash with that rib !
There are many of us in the Windy City SB and we are doing the best we can against the tides. Thanks for your kind words.
