I used to buy a lot of gear from Recreational Equipment, Inc. (R.E.I.).
There was an outlet store close to my company’s previous office location, and I was doing a lot of canoe racing and charity cycling events. So I was constantly needing new “stuff” to support these two activities. And R.E.I. had the stuff I needed, and I was able to go put my hands on it before buying. Plus their customer rewards program and return policy are industry bests.
But, as I said…I used to buy a lot of gear from R.E.I.
I haven’t bought a single item from them in more than 2 years, and doubt I’ll ever buy another item from them in the future. Why?
Well, first of all: My company moved and Amazon Prime happened.
Our office moved to a new location, and R.E.I. is no longer convenient for me to drop into their shop. And, other than R.E.I. branded merchandise, there’s nothing they sale that I can’t get from Amazon. And I can almost always get it cheaper and faster via Amazon, who also has a damned fine rewards program and even better return policy.
But I also found out more about the company. And their far-left wing CEO, Sally Jewell (no relation to the singer, I think). The lady is an environmental whack-job, who is fully on-board the Al Gore “man-caused global warming is the greatest danger to our nation” bandwagon. Then I found out that she’s also a faithful lapdog to Barack and Michelle.
So, I’m not exactly thrilled about her appointment to be replace Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior:
Barack Obama chose the head of the REI outdoor equipment stores to manage America’s wide open spaces on Wednesday, in the first pick of his second-term environment team.
The choice of Sally Jewell, an oil engineer who went on to win environmental awards, was unconventional. The post of interior secretary has generally gone to career politicians from western states. The outgoing secretary, Ken Salazar, was a Democratic senator from Colorado.
On a positive note, it does bring some much needed real-world business experience to an Obama administration that has…well…none. And, it finally ends a great run of white men being appointed to his cabinet, and adds some much needed “diversity.”
But why does this news not surprise:

If Obamacare is so good, why do all of its supporters keep trying to get a waiver?
